any time anyone asks me if i can give them some money (as ultimately 99% of the time it is give not borrow as it never makes its way back again' I say i've only bought enough for the bus/dinner/drink/ whatever i need it for and say I don't have any more and sorry.

As I'm a great believer in that if i've earnt it then its mine to do as i like and its not for others unless its something that I have to pay out

  • I wouldn't be mean/rude as you still have to work with him, just tell him you are struggling yourself this month.

I wouldn't say that because that's saying you would but... and therefore that is inviting him to keep asking again on other months.

Say no, but tell him about this great MSE website?
Email him a weblink to the front page (or debt free wannabee) on the first of the month?

Say no and tell him next time he asks the answer will be exactly the same.
  • i used to work with someone who regularly borrowed money, and was very reluctant to pay it back. He owed me £10, and wanted to borrow even more money off me, stating if I lent him £20 he could pay back the £10 he owed me!

Just tell him that you don't borrow money and you don't lend money as this can lead to problems between people, and you have been put in this position before and promised yourself you would never lend anyone money again not even family.

So if you wont lend to family you wont lend to friends.

Just thought I would add this bit in. The other thing is he could have some sort of problem ie: gambling/drugs/drink and you could be just adding to his problems.

If it's affecting the workplace I don't see anything wrong with involving the manager. No names need be mentioned just that someone is causing a difficult environment by asking to borrow money. Ask the boss if he can send an email/letter to everyone making it clear this is not acceptable. He may take the opportunity to reiterate other workplace rules at the same time.
Agree with this: one place I used to work it stated explicitly that no-one was to ask to borrow money. That's not to say it never happened, but there certainly wasn't a culture of it!

I think it depends more what it's for.

I had to ask someone the other week if I could borrow £2 for Stansted airport car park, but it's very rare I'll do this (I keep about £20 in £1 coins in the centre console of my car, and it was only because I had OH's car I needed it).

It was, at the same time, returned when I'd had the chance to see OH (about an hour after I'd got back into the office) and taken it out of my car.

I'd probably tell him no, i don't lend anyone money. If he asked again, say the same in case he forgot. If he asked again i'd just refuse to acknowledge him
