When Northern Ireland was set up, they made the mistake of making the border on a county boundary basis - it was only going to be temporary after all. There was never much of a reason to include south Armagh for instance. The 1920 boundary commission was supposed to correct all that, but the free state wouldn't play ball, as east Donegal was going to be passed to NI. And we couldn't have that.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0

I would love Donegal to be part of NI, I wonder if there would be any appetite for it within the county if it went to a vote?0

It was only the eastern bit, called the Laggan.
Interestingly, Donegal's population collapsed after 1921, with more Catholics by far emigrating. This resulted in the Protestant percentage increasing.
In my admittedly anecdotal experience, Donegal Catholics tend to be more nationalistic than those further south. So that's a big NO vote.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -

I remember Lard Laird was going to stand for election there at one point - I didn't think he had a chance to be honest.0 -
