We all knew this wasn't going to be easy but I'm glad it's going on. A resolution on these matters would really help us. In the meantime I'd like to see more police action on the really serious goings on of recent weeks and months.

Difficult to criticise without knowing what has been proposed.

Also even if the DUP/UUP do agree, there is no guarantee that those involved in ongoing flag protests will.

I've heard some of the proposals but not in detail. I've also heard the DUP object to them. The Unionist Party is being more reasonable in my opinion but still objecting in principle to certain things. Sinn Fein and the SDLP are saying they're agreeing to everything.

The BBC have also conducted a Moray poll and the results, whilst in some cases are predictable, generally support the common sense view.

It looks to me as if the DUP are still playing at being hard liners, playing to the extreme right, which I think they need to do to secure that vote because it's that and the Bible Belt support which put them where they are and will keep them there. They like power and are determined to hold onto it.

Let's take one proposal which Haas has made. He says the Union Flag should only fly on designated days. The left support this as do the public (as per the Moray poll). The DUP are absolutely opposed and it looks as if the Unionist Party are too but they haven't said anything yet which looks like a compromise and that then brings us right back to the same kind of intransigence we've become used to from the right.

    No surrender! :rotfl:

The cynic in me believes there will be a very good outcome.I understand from a very reliable source (dogs in the street) they propose some sort of 2 or even 3 tier system to replace the parades commission, that being the case just think how many jobs for the boys and girls thats going to provide.
As always with a parade here the start and finish times will be safely ignored and as with the court cases this week if you are charged with breaking the rules you claim,
    (a) you are barely literate and could not read the 6ft high police notices telling you it was an illegal parade or,
    (b) You were too busy watching the safety your 15 year old "child" in case he/she choked on the bottle of buckfast..
We can perhaps expect on xmas eve a group photo of the great and good with lots of handshakes, backslapping and who knows maybe even a few "selfies" along with the joint statements from the first and deputy first ministers telling us how the talks have been "tough but we believe with determination and goodwill on all sides we can progress".
Then mr haas can leave for home with a merry xmas ringing in his ears and our politicians can get back to doing what they do best,nothing.......

I'm cynical too about most things but even if the Haas talks only resolve one issue it'll be progress. There's no reason why we can't have other rounds of talks. Something which has burned in people's hearts for so long can't necessarily be extinguished overnight and we also have to expect some sort of a violent backlash if either side doesn't get what it wants from the talks, especially if anything is forced upon any section of the community.

Whatever resolutions are agreed by the politicians has to be sold very carefully to the great unwashed, otherwise we're going to finish up with more embarrassing film footage going around the world.

dont think haass will make it onto martins next weekly email but think hastings(stormont hotel) will be hoping the talks drag on for while longer :p
  • more "peace processing" (tm) over a manufactured "crisis", so that we & the media are distracted from the reality, which is the impact austerity measures are having in our hospitals and schools etc

it would appear that "peace processing" is the only thing that our politicians can speak with any confidence on.
