After I witnessed and avoided a scrum (large ladies pushing everyone but their friends /family away), a checkout lady at our Tesco told me that the same regulars lurk every evening, ready for the kill.
On another occasion, the dairy aisle was the danger spot. Just as I was passing, an assistant arrived with a trolley of green boxes containing sandwiches and the grabbers there (probably road workers judging by their clothing) even frightened off a large man, who thought he'd get a quick snack, as they surged forward, arms flailing as they went.
As this seems a common occurrence it would, surely, be safer to have reduced items spread out at the locations they are normally sold in, while giving more people a chance, too.0 -
I shop in Aldi and home bargains mostly. I was in M and S yesterday as I had a gift card to use, very busy but my thoughts were, how do people afford to shop here, the prices were ridiculous and the people looked no different from those you would see in Tesco, my local M and S certainly isnt posh.
Tesco, my local Tesco generally reduces prices around 7pm to the cheapest. I got a few 5p and 7p loaves last night, but no scrum, all quiet, the shop is quiet at that time of night.
My local Morrisons tends to reduce prices earlier in the day, around 3 or 4pm and you can get some decent yellow stickered stuff. I think the problem is the size of the area the yellow stickered stuff is in is often tiny.
Perhaps it is a sign of the times when people are fighting over yellow stickered shopping, my thoughts are, if I get a bargain fine and if I dont, no big deal.0 -
Our Tesco has gangs come in for the reduced stuff they work as a team and don't let anyone else get a look in. They buy more than they can possibly need for personal use. It is thought that they have a restaurant or some type of food business. They always use coupons at the checkout too to bring their bill down even further. They don't speak much English so we don't know much about them apart from observing their behaviour.:j Trytryagain FLYLADY - SAYE £700 each month Premium Bonds £713 Mortgage Was £100,000@20/6/08 now zilch 21/4/15:beer: WTL - 52 (I'll do it 4 MUM)0

Used to work in a Foodhall of large department store in London and had the same regulars every evening looking for the bargains. Most were nice and friendly, a good chat would help them a lot and I would often give the nice regulars first dibs. But there were some (particularly on Sundays) who did just fight over and rummage though all the bread without worrying about squashing it or even dropping it onto floor.
The worst were the customers who would hold onto things in a basket at 25% off then seeing me doing 50% would come back and demand their basket full is reduced, I always refused, once they picked it out they had committed to that price in my opinion. 75% discounts were stopped as to many just kept waiting around for them, once they got used to that we sold more at 50% off.0 -
Re: gangs have seen security guards in the town centre (posher) Sainsbury's here refusing entry to groups of Eastern Europeans. I don't know whether that's because they hog the YS, steal, get aggressive with staff pr what. Most of them don't speak much English and get aggressive towards the security guards. AFAIK supermarkets can restrict entry and ban people.0

As well as the obvious money savings, the pushing and shoving is a lot to do with culture. The Brit's are famous for queueing, other cultures aren't! The Tesco bun fight reminds me of being first in the bus queue, when on holiday in the Med, thinking you're bound to get a seat, only to find when the bus arrives, you're lucky to even get on.0

Me and the OH were just discussing this, having visited the Slough branch once, once was enough. Its new but still horrible big store in the centre of town and as a result is always busy - I was passing through a 2nd time and gave up trying to get a space in the car park and went somewhere else. People all had a me, me me attitude shoving others out of the way and barging their trollies through. Never again.
I avoid my local store like the plague but when in there I've had the odd bargain but people do act defensively, blocking others with their trollies and baskets! No manners or care in the world!I love food, hate waste and have a penchant for sparkly things ::D
Trying to find a work life balance...:rotfl:0 -
OH works nights for one of the big 4 and there are fights all the time, not usually over the yellow stickered stuff though. It's usually drunkards or thieves or thieves that are drunk. A guy brandishing a machete one time!Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game0
