Wow what a week. I think you dealt with your son brilliantly and he won't forget in a hurry. And well done on not letting it de-rail you, and keeping tight on April too.

Just a quick warning about the Mot if this is what you meant. If you put it in for the test and it fails (say due to lights) then you can't drive it, other than to and from test centre, until it passes. This is even if the original MOT hasn't run out yet - the new "fail" supersedes the old "pass". If you just take it to a garage for a check, that's different, but wasn't sure which you meant. Of course lights etc can be checked by yourself anyway.

I only every afforded quite old cars, but my lovely man at the garage used to have a check over a couple of weeks before the test was due and then he could rectify any problems before it was booked in for the test.

I had a feeling when I posted above that the law had changed and is now as you pointed out, but was not sure.:D

My Dad has a garage, but it's not an Mot station. A lot of his customers do it that way - take the car in to him, he checks it over, tells them what he thinks will need done, they decide what they want done in advance or are going to risk. Then it goes for its test, and only at that point does it become a pass/fail scenario. It's perfectly fine to get it looked over in advance, just not actually "tested".

As an aside, that's a useful way to do it with old cars. This is because the mechanic will likely have a good relationship with the mot station (my dad spends thousands with them on behalf of customers); and I would say they are perhaps kinder in the interpretation of the rules than your local HiQ might be. Martin actually talks about using the government centres for this reason, they aren't interested in making money out of your repairs.

Sorry for the thread hijack. We've kept a very old landie on the road for many years now :p

Hi Steph, me again. Just checking in to say well done especially with your son. Rather a shock for you (and him) but he will remember the lesson for a long time. Re the MOT I always think when saving for a big bill to come "A penny saved is a penny available when needed" or alternatively "Every little helps" Cheers BL1

Thanks for your replies everyone. I must admit to not thinking that an early MOT would take over from the old, even though the old one hadn't expired. But it makes sense I suppose.

Will make sure I definitely ask for a check over rather than an MOT. I am kind of tempted to do it during April, then at least we will have an idea what the likely expenses will be. I would much rather know in plenty of time.

Nothing to report here really. Just gotten back from my children school Easter Service in the local church.

It was so beautiful I cried. They did a dance with ribbons signifying Easter and it was beautiful. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Just got time now to ice some cakes for our after school caf! and then I have to be in school for 1pm to help set up the Easter Egg hunt and get the caf! ready.

I am VERY glad it is the last day of term so we can all relax a little for the next two weeks.

All of my sons spending has finally come out of our account, so hopefully the activity to report into YNAB will slow down now. Never had so much updating to do....

He still owes £87, he is slowly doing little jobs round the house, earning £1 each time. REALLY hoping that the Ebay items sell this weekend, so he can settle his bill. We have said that he is grounded until the debt is repaid, so if they don't sell, he may have a very boring Easter break :o.

Thanks everyone for your replies and help. Really appreciated.
Right off to ice some cakes xxx
  • Hey Steph

    Take a look at this - http://m.hotukdeals.com/misc/reclaim-your-app-purchases-from-apple-1870687?mforwarded=true

Not sure I agree with it wholly, but if other people manage to get refunds then there's no harm in at least trying xx

    Afternoon all,

Just paid a MASSIVE £3.27 off on the Barclaycard. Sold a DS game on Ebay so passed it straight on to the Credit Card.

Funny. I have been paying off Barclaycard with tonnes of little payments, and what did I get through the post yesterday??. A letter from them upping my credit limit by another 1k. haha typical.

I'm on the prowl for new stuff to list on Ebay. I have just realised that we have an old slide in the garden un-used so will go and photograph that in a minute.

Hope you are all doing well.

  • Hi Steph, sorry for not checking in when you needed support. Well done to you for sorting out the problem with your son's purchases in such a way that makes him see the consequences of his actions, he won't forget that in a hurry! I wish I had someone in my life when I was a kid to teach me about money and finances. I had one side saying always have a wad of notes in your purse and showing off with material possession s The other side was very tight, for example if we were allowed a packet of sweets it would be one sweet from the packet!

You've made so much progress I'm sure it must be frustrating but even £3.27 is better than nothing.

Keep it going it's only April 5th.

Just sold the old slide that was in the garden for £30.

Have given it to hubby for his Fuel costs next week, because he will pay cash for it and not use the bank account. I can now pay £30 off the Barclaycard out of the account. Does that make sense?.

    Barclaycard now down to £250.

    Getting there :T.
As soon as hubby gets paid tomorrow morning, I should be able to pay off the last £250.

Wow I could be down to 6 debts tomorrow morning

    what fantastic news:j:T

You will soon be attacking the dreaded Next, this might be the one to report percentage paid against or the 100 squares @ 1% thingy, you would then be looking at the positive of how much cleared rather than the negative of how much left, better for keeping your spirits up, as this is the first big one:D

Going away in the motor home for a couple of days, so might not be able to cheer you along, or look at FB regarding the iron cover:(
