I've just collected my car from North Wales VW in Llandudno. VW paid for the part and 50% of the labour. My Used Car Warranty funded the other 50% of the bill, thank God!!!! To be fair, it's been more hassle messing around with courtesy cars than the actual repair of my car.
Good luck to all others who find themselves in my position.

hi I have a golf plus 2010, and recently my engine management light came on, after having my cam belt changed, I took the car back to the VW garage who tried to charge £1317.00 to replace the EGR valve, looking back through the service history this is the 2nd time this has needed to be replaced. After several phone calls to VW customer services they agreed with the local garage that the cost would be £815.00. Having had the work done the engine management light came back a day after getting the car back, took car back to the garage who have now advised that the change over valve is faulty and needs replacing.
I bought a VW because I thought they would be reliable however this is not the case and I will never buy one again.

The Egr can be bypassed but you would also need to remove and delete the dpf. As this is a linked system. This is probably the best solution 'long term'. Because the Egr is normally the cause of the dpf failing it will eliminate problems in the future as a blocked dpf can lead to all sorts of issues. I had my Golf 2.0tdi done from a company based in Nottingham called Castle Street Tuning .Totally transformed my car and they are helpful. You can contact them on 07527427500.

BE CAREFUL if you are considering getting the DPF removed because - dependent on the age of the car IIRC - that can be an MoT failure in itself.

Also, EGR removal normally also means that the ECU will need reprogramming to take that into account.

Its spam, new poster, two posts singing the praises of a garage that needs to spam to get work, tells you all you need to know.

    You well could be correct!

Anyway, my reply is equally valid in the wider context of any garage/ tuning shop which offers EGR and/or DPF removals.

    Hi All,
Have been reading this thread with great interest as we are now suffering the same issues. Our car is a VW '59 registered 1.6 Tdi Bluemotion Golf with < 80k miles.
Yesterday my wife picked up our son from nursery and was on the way home, when pulling out of a junction the car lost all power and the glow plug started flashing intermittently. I had the code read by a local garage and the code present was 'EGR Adaption failure'. The whole limp-mode experience definitely shook my wife somewhat, because suddenly losing all power when pulling out of a junction with a small baby on board is, as you can imagine, not a very pleasant experience at all.

So after reading through all of these posts from the same unfortunate people who put their faith in VW - I decided to call VW Customer care to see what they could do to help.

They advised me to get the car booked into a local dealer for a diagnostic check, because this would determine if the fault was actually an EGR fault or something else.
The lady on the phone from VW (who was very helpful and understanding) also asked me if the car had full VW history, to which I replied "No, however, the car has mainly VW history bar the last two services". I then explained that the car has been taken to a reputable VW specialist who only uses the correct professional long life oils etc... I hope that they do not try to use this as an excuse for what-ever reason. However, from reading this thread and after diagnostics have taken place, dealer dependant - VW have have historically fronted the cost of the unfit EGR valve/cooler and 50% towards labour costs or 70% if you have FVWSH.

    Log:

10/06/15 - Called VW Care and raised a case - given case number.
12/06/15 - Car dropped off at local VW dealer.
15/06/15 - Car booked in with local dealer for diagnostic check.

As this seems like such a common fault - should they fail to help us, both my wife and I have agreed to approach Watchdog to see whether they would be interested in running a televised episode containing some of the cases from this thread. What makes things even harder for us is that we have always put our faith in VW and this is the fourth VW Golf that we have owned. However, this is the first vehicle with Bluemotion technology (which by the way, has the worst fuel economy out of the bunch by quite a fair amount [one of the selling points for us was the acclaimed mpg...]).

Furthermore, we have a close friend who works for Audi and who we initially contacted for advice. He told us that they swapped out two EGR/Cooler units yesterday and are currently doing one now (I asked him to send me a picture and this can be seen in the image below). He stated that the same original part is used throughout all the ranges Audi/VW have to offer and as a consequence has affected a lot of units.

    [NEW] [OLD]

He told me that the replacement modules are new and that the part has been updated - it has a different part number and visually the new part has a plastic cap on the linkage, a heat shield and most likely different internals also. Seems strange to update the EGR valve unless there were known issues with the first iteration. So either the calibration engineers who set up the software for the car got it wrong or the assembly is simply not engineered well-enough to be fit for purpose, or, perhaps it may be a combination of both factors. From reading earlier posts it is definitely a wide spread known issue...

I will continue to update this thread with our case in the hope that it helps others; like the posts previously have somewhat helped prompt myself to contact VW direct.

    Regards

    Update:

Had a call from Johnsons VW in Birmingham. After having the car since Saturday, they call today to state the fault is the EGR/Cooler, which is what I had already told them. They then stated the charge to replace the faulty part would be nearly £1400!!

When I told him that it is a known issue and that VW have historically been putting goodwill into place for customers, he decides to pull out the old trick that the car does not have full VW service history etc... To say I'm disappointed with his comments is an understatement. I proceed to inform him that the part is known to be an issue, which is why VW have been helping out THEIR customers who purchase THEIR cars who RETURN to the brand time and time again. He then tells me that he has checked the numbers with the "factory"?? and this EGR is not affected by the faulty ones. Okay, so there has been an issue with them previously? Well if so why didn't VW do a recall? I then asked why VW felt the need to upgrade the EGR valve if there wasn't an issue with it and also change the part numbers of it? He couldn't answer any of my questions at all.

I'll be calling VW care back to check what is happening with this case as it is disgraceful how some dealers can assist some customers who only have part service history and other dealers try to charge £1400!

After reading the reviews on Google for Johnsons, I was apprehensive of taking the car to them in the first place. However, as VW Care said a diagnostic was needed I reluctantly did. I understand that a diagnostic test is a useful procedure, which enables VW mechanics to easily identify faults (car basically tells them what is wrong with it). However, if it was going to be down to "checked the codes with the factory and your car isn't part of the faulty batch", why call us in for a diagnostic test in the first place? Surely the VIN would have told them that? Competency?

Will keep you all informed should any of you be going through the same old <meta name="EGR Valve VW" content="" /> FAULTY VW EGR VALVE issue.

    Hi dibbles00

Stick to your guns as co-incidentally, that is the dealer I went to and experienced the same issue! It took a good few days and several calls but they did end up giving the part for free and 50% off the labour cost.
Also, be sure to speak to Watchdog as your issue is current right now and it may help in getting some traction on the matter.

Look forward to hearing your updates; hopefully with a positive outcome.

    Update:
Called VW Care this morning to be told that my case had still not been assigned a manager. Now bare in mind my initial contact with VW was on the 10th of June (six days ago). When probed, the agent with whom I was speaking with said the case was initially assigned a manager, but needed to be assigned another one and couldn't give me an explanation as to why. This still doesn't explain why they've not attempted to make contact with me. I've now been told that someone should be in contact within 24-36 hours.

Random - with regards to that dealer - I had the worst time there. Within one minute of being there I was passed from pillar to post; seemed no one wanted to help assist me in any way and I was only dropping the car off. This dealer was definitely not representing the "people's car" well.

I'm taking your advice and have finally completed the form. I'm positive that they are interested in this issue. Mainly because a) it is a wide spread known issue b) the Audi oil consumption episode was a great success in progressing the manufacturer to admit there was an issue with their engines and c) most importantly - helping consumers get their required and deserved resolutions.

What concerns me is how various searches redirect you to Audi's own site? Is that clever Audi PR paying for searches to be redirected to their site? Hmmm.

Hopefully the next update on "Das Auto" will be more positive once a case manager actually get assigned to our case.

15/06/15 - Call from VW dealer agreeing the EGR valve is faulty. Cost of repair near £1400.
16/06/15 - Call VW Care. Still not assigned a case manager so no progress yet.
