Humax HDR 1000S/1010 PVR?

Could anyone assist as my knowledge of all things technical is sadly lacking.

I currently have a sat dish and a Humax Foxsat receiver. I want to replace this with a Humax sat PVR. I don't want a white one and the latest 1010 model comes in white only, but has wifi included.

The black version 1000 surprisingly doesn't have wifi and an ethernet cable has to be connected, but I don't want a cable trailing through to the router which is in the hall; either that or buy a dongle. The assistant advised if I don't connect either or these then I would miss out on half the features.I don't mind not getting catch up tv such as iplayer, 4od etc. so is that all I'd miss out on?.

If you don't want the on-demand services then you don't need to connect it to the internet (although catch-up is largely the USP of YouView/Freetime). If you do, then you can just use a pair of Homeplugs to link it up-no need for a long ethernet cable, and more reliable than wi-fi.
To record one channel and view another (or to record two channels simultaneously), you must have a twin feed from the LNB, not a single one (which is all that the old Foxsat digibox requires).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Freesat have plans to introduce some subscription services to the platform (e.g. the rumours that Netflix is arriving on Freetime) so without internet connectivity you miss out on catch up plus any of the other future services.

You can get a wi fi bridge to plug into the Ethernet port on the STB that would then allow you internet connectivity if you should feel the need for it in the future.

  • Thank you so much macman and Walcott.

The assistant in the shop didn't mention the option of Home Plugs or a
wi fi bridge and, as I've never heard of them, you both have given me valuable advice which I really appreciate.

I wonder why at the Hi Fi and TV shop they never suggested either of these options. Again many thanks.

If the shop was Currys, then they wouldn't know Homeplugs from the Home Service...
Something like this will do the job:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-PA411KIT-AV500-Powerline-Adapter/dp/B0084Y9N3O/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1387380548&sr=1-1&keywords=homeplugs+tp+link
Don't forget to check that you have a twin feed from the dish, or you won't be recording very much at all with your Humax PVR.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Either because you didn't ask or the assistant who served you was clueless. All they want is to sell you extended guarantees!

Humax Direct are selling "Grade A" HDR-1000S 500gb models for £159

We bought one and I can't see why it is a graded product. Works perfectly and came all boxed up with all plastic over it. Full 12 month warranty too.

I use homeplugs with it and no issues watching all the connected services. If you are thinking of using them try not to use them in extension leads if you can help it. Dedicated sockets give best speeds.

Humax also do a wireless dongle for £29 if you can't do the homeplugs.

I concur. Graded Humax products are fine. I bought a YouView PVR recently. The only (slight) downside is a 12m warranty rather than the standard Humax 24m-but then PVR's are pretty reliable anyway, until the drive eventually fails.

A few years ago, when I bought one of our Humax boxes (Richer Sounds, not graded), it was listed as having two years' warranty, but the paperwork in the box said it was just one year. I contacted Humax about this but got no reply, though it didn't matter as I bought Richer Sounds' 5 year warranty anyway (having had problems with the previous two brands of pvr after about three years).

Showing my lack of knowledge but what is a "Grade A" model?
    Seems a great price.

It's a returned decoder which has been fully refurbished. It'll be boxed and guaranteed for a year, but remains second hand, of course.
