Some people will shop at aldi and lidl because they have to, others will shop because they prefer to spend the money somewhere else or on something else.

If it is to buy similar products that is their choice and their loss.

Does anyone actually believe the unemployment figures quoted these days. Surely it should read more like - currently unemployed plus economically inactive less economically inactive in 2007. That may well give a much more accurate figure. After all, once your contributions based unemployment benefit has run out you go on income based and if you have a partner who is earning then it may well not be worth putting yourself through the aggro of attending the not very pleasant Job Centre. Don't get me started on sanctions!

Sky News reports tonight that out of 30 million , 8 million are in part time work and off those 20% were actively seeking full time work -the highest figure since records began in 1992.

If there are record people in work you expect also

    Record part timers
Record part timers who want full time work

It all goes with there being record numbers in work

    Duhhhhhh

Given the current shape of benefits that encourages part time work + benefits, I suspect that the word "want" is possibly a bit superfluous above. They would say that wouldn't they?

The examples they gave said the part time work was better than JSA which suggests they were unlikely to be receiving further assistance.

A lot of the drop can be down to people becoming self employed and zero hours contract. Also many getting full time employment might be at less than they had at previous job.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

People working part time is up 95,000 over the quarter so it's no surprise that a good chunk of them will want full time work. Being part time is better than on JSA for lots of reasons that there's no need to spell out :p

The number of people working full time up 155,000 so it's looking like it's starting to even out even though it's a survey etc etc.

But if you include inactive people you're including full time students, gin sodden early retired people who post on forums all day, people who can't work; doesn't tell you much about the state of the economy.

The counts of people on job seeker's and unemployed people are separate. You can count as unemployed even if you're not on JSA. You don't need to turn up to the job centre for the ONS to count you as unemployed as they base it on a survey.

On the sanctions you continue to count as unemployed in the usual way if you're being sanctioned; if you're still looking for work. If you continue to sign on whilst being sanctioned you still count towards the number of those on JSA; if you stop signing on you stop counting.

I think the figures are a 'best guess'. At the end of the day there are international standards, which they are done to, and if governments for example encourage people to go on the sick so they don't count as unemployed then that doesn't mean the figures are wrong as such. They just measure what they're supposed to, the number of people who aren't working and are looking for work.
