It's £34.98 if you go Liverpool Moorfields/Carlisle at 12:20 and return at 17:35 to Lime Street on the Sunday. Lots of other options cheaper than £53.70 too.
    #2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £366

I've just tried the Rail Easy website as I am travelling to Carlisle from Liverpool on Saturday 24th August and the price came up at £53.70 return, leaving Liverpool at 13.45 and arriving at Carlisle at 16.02

Sunday 25th August - leaving Carlisle at 10.52 and arriving in Liverpool at 13.09

Are there any cheaper options other than the above ?

    Thanks

£25.10 leaving Lime Street at 14.37on Saturday, returning at 11.53 on Sunday. You need to use https://new.trainsplit.com/

  • Just booked split return tickets for me and the missus from Inverkeithing to Plymouth for £226.04, saving £75.96 on the normal fare (with senior railcards). Journey was split into 10 tickets for the outward trip and 11 for the return. Must be a record!!
  • Return from Kings Cross to Newcastle - £95
Split the trip into two single tickets on exactly the same dates and times - £63
    Both prices from SplitTrainTickets.com

Honestly don't understand why. Or why our train ticket system is so damn complicated that you have to spend hours to get a decent price to make it worth ditching the car for the same trip. Grrr

    ...Honestly don't understand why....
Newcastle to York has competition; it is therefore often cheaper to split there. It is even cheaper if you do not mind changing.

The site you mentioned should find options that involve changing if you put it into the cheapest mode and/or click intensive search, though if you save £30 on a through train then you may as well stick with that and avoid the inconvenience of changing. But it's an option to save even more.
Or why our train ticket system is so damn complicated that you have to spend hours to get a decent price ...
The reason it is cheaper to split is because Newcastle to York is a competitive route with 3 companies vying for your custom. York to London has 2 companies competing. But overall Newcastle to London has only one company offering through fares. So that company charges a premium. Most people pay that premium. If they were forced to avoid a situation where it was cheaper to split, you can safely assume the cheaper prices would need to go up, sadly. So it may be best that we do not wish for it!

I don't agree you need to spend hours though; just use any accredited split ticket site (such as the one you mentioned); put it into fast mode if you want to see the fastest journeys, and value/cheap mode if you want to see if you can save even more. This only takes seconds!
  • So on 21st December I am travelling from Cambridge to Grimsby and returning back to Cambridge on 4th January, cheapest was splitmyfare with total price of £63:10 after their share of the saving which was £7:20, however when I searched I could not find this particular route, my brother found it, when he searched using exactly the same search specification he got a totally different set of results to me! So it would appear Splitmyfare being the cheapest but inconsistent with the search results. But I am happy with my saving and it appears its the cheapest out there.

    What times are you travelling?

The prices can change because, at any moment, an Advance fare at a particular price tier can sell out.

    Thank you!

Yes, it does appear that part of the journey is missing.

Interesting to note that Trainsplit.com also shows exactly the same bit missing.
