I'm sure I had a book from Brownies about first aid and it told you to tilt your head back! I learnt that was a bad idea rather quickly- all that blood dribbling down your throat, ick!

As people here have said, head forwards, nose pinched and ice in towel to back of neck. What you all missed was the joy of watching the blood seep out of my daughter's tear ducts when there was no where else for it to go .
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

Both my kids got regular nosebleeds when younger and I would get up in the morning with tissue all over the bathroom and spots of blood everywhere, they had been taught it was nothing to worry about and to clean themselves up as and when it occurred (my son averaged one or two each week for ages) now he pulls off tissue and rams it hard up his nostrils and wanders about the house looking very odd. Daughter tends to have hers stop after a few minutes, and I also get a few which are spontaneous so just sit quietly while they happen.

I got one once in a meeting at work where I was taking the minutes, so I got up and left, grabbed some tissue and continued with the meeting while holding tissue in place, I got some funny looks but as I work in the NHS not much was said lol
:) Been here for a long time and don't often post

I can't believe people would still think it's ok to tip your head back it's obvious that's a bad idea!
  • Current first aid advice is to bend forward and pinch. If it doesn't stop within a reasonable time then seek medical attention. Don't tilt the head back as the blood goes down your throat and can choke you.

The bit my son remembers most is one of the dads going into the ladies for toilet roll as it was softer than in the mens.

How did the Dad concerned know that? :rotfl:
