Do you know what to do with a nosebleed?

DH was watching a man-movie and as usual someone got hit, had a nosebleed and as usual in films and on TV tilted their head back.

I'm just wondering who in fact believes that this is the right thing to do?

And if you do..... have you ever tried it?

I'm afraid I shout at these moments in movies/TV shows as I know its the wrong thing to do and DH gets very grumpy at me.

My son suffered reall badly with nosebleeds when he was a kid.

We were told never to put his head back. Keep your head straight and pinch it until it stops.

This worked most times although he did have to have it cauterised a couple of times.
  • That doesn't annoy me as much as "Over and Out"

Which is it?!! Over to you or Out I've finished contact!! grrr

But yeah, Tilting your head back is a no no
What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..
  • I get these all the time (still waiting to get it cauterized).

Tilting head back isn't advised as the blood runs down the back of your throat and you can choke, the benefit initially is that you don't ruin your clothes though!

Best thing I find is to sit with your head forward and pinch the bridge of your nose to cut off the vein and help clotting.

This only works really when it's bleeding at the front, deeper bleeds usually need your nose packing with gauze etc.

I learnt by watching Casualty as a small child that you do not hold your head back, in case you choke on the blood. Instead, hold it forward and pinch the bridge of your nose. This info stemmed the only nosebleed I had when I was around 6, I remember it very clearly!

Stamp on their foot to make them forget about it?
And frozen peas/sprouts come into it somewhere - possibly also dropped on the toe as a distraction?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

No, but the movies have taught me that the way to deal with traumatised and/or hysterical women is a couple of hard slaps to the face.

If only more people paid attention to what they see in movies. I wouldn't have had to attend all those disciplinary meetings and court hearings. :(

So glad to hear that most people are sensible :)

My worst bleed lasted over 2 hours and came out of my mouth too!

A cold cloth (or peas elsien :) ) on the forehead and back of neck can help too

My nosebleeds used to be fairly legendary - I've seen tamer murder scenes!(forensic science degree!)

If you can bear it, a couple of ice cubes used to pinch the bridge of the nose usually does the trick - contracts the blood vessels.

You shouldn't tip your head back if your nose is bleeding because the blood will run into your stomach and blood is rich in iron which can cause stomach upsets if you aren't used to it.

And yes, the choking thing too.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.
  • Was always taught to sit down with head forward (sort of brace position) so everything can drain away, towels on floor to protect flooring optional depending on who's house you're at ;)
