Have to say I have opened post addressed to someone that used to rent a room from my wife before we married (she left about 8 years ago) and a few of them were debt chasing letters - so I just rang the companies involved and informed them that she didnt live here any more. All of them were fine and have removed our details from their systems. If I was still getting letters two years after moving in I would be opening them - but that might just be me!

I'd reseal them, with selotape, stick them back in the Post box, with the words "Opened in Error, not known at this address, no forwarding address known, return to sender.......Dear sender please remove this address from your database"

There is no need to write "opened in error" as you are perfectly entitled to open any mail delivered to your property even if it addressed to someone not living there provided that you have a reasonable reason for doing so and doing this to make sure that debt collectors are holding correct information is a good reason.
