Scary knock at door

not sure if this is the right place to put this so feel free to move it if it's in the wrong place.
At about 10.30 tonight there was a knock at the door. I looked through the peep-hole and didn't recognise the person so decided to ignore it. The person then knocked again, this time trying to open the door (thankfully it was locked) and then knocked on the window. This went on for about 5 minutes before I watched him get in a car and drive away.
I then decided to phone the police who took a description and they suggested it may be a bailiff. I don't owe anyone anything and always keep on top of my payments so the only way this would be possible would be if a previous owner has outstanding debt, however after doing some research apparently bailiffs can only knock during daylight hours. Is this true and what should my next steps be? How am I going to find out if the previous owners owe money? I have been sticking their post back in the post marked as 'not at this address'

It is recommended that enforcement should only be carried out between the hours of 6.00am and 9.00pm or at any time during trading hours, existing legislation must be observed.
this is not legislation however all bailiff firms have agreed to be governed by them

that says they shouldn't come on Sundays either. The police told me they searched the area and couldn't find anyone matching the description I gave
would it be illegal to open future mail received for the previous owners? (I've lived here for almost 2 years) £2013 in 2013 challenge - £2235.75/£20130 -
You don't know it was a bailiff. Even if it was it wasn't for you. I'm not sure why you're worrying over this?0

I'm worrying because he tried to open my door.£2013 in 2013 challenge - £2235.75/£20130

Sounds more like a thief than a bailiff.0

I don't want to worry you but personally I don't think it was a bailiff I cant see a bailiff turning up at someone's door at 10.30 on a Sunday night
as for the mail whether its legal or not to open someone's mail after 2 yrs of living there I would be opening it if it was meI am not an expert I am self taught i have no legal training any information I post is based on my own personal experience and information gained from other web sites

So keep your doors locked and windows closed and, if he turns up again, either speak to him through the door or call the police whilst he is there.
I don't see how you can do anything else unless you have a name, reg number or something more to go on.0 -
I couldn't get a car reg without opening the door because there was a parked car blocking my view. I always keep my doors locked. I'm worried he may try to come back when I'm not in or something (I worry really easily)£2013 in 2013 challenge - £2235.75/£20130
