So do you just buy a load of Tesco Value flour ? How much do you need to make a loaf out of a 1.5Kg bag ?

No do not use any sort of Value plain flour, you need bread making flour, which is "harder" Most stores sell it, at varying prices, it is around 60 to 80p. The beast, but dearest, is Canadian hard flour from Waitrose, over £1

  • I use my panasonic about 3-4 times a week, I live in the country but I would use it anyway as I get to choose the ingredients. Tonight I am starting ciabatta and just using it to make the dough, which I will bake in the oven tomorrow and I know for sure that it will look and taste wonderful.

I don`t particularly like the hole in the bottom but it really is a small price to pay and I make dough when I want to impress, then simply bake a rustic shape in the oven. My dh loves the spicey fruit loaf, lightly toasted, far better and cheaper than shop bought tea loaves. I always use shiphams or doves flour, I don`t add sugar and use a smidgen less salt. The last loaf I made was rye and wholemeal and the one previous was a white crusty french loaf. I would not be without the panny which stands ready on my worktop

I make at least one loaf per day in my Panasonic breadmaker and have done for years (lost count). I also agree that the Canadian flour from Waitrose is the best - not only for the results, but also for health - it isn't depleted in selenium like a lot of British flours. I use a mixture of wholemeal and white, and sometimes add a tablespoon or two of milled seeds.

Another vote here for the Panasonic, my first BM was a Morphy Richards quite a few years ago. The bread was OK, but nothing exciting. When I was coming up to retirement I treated myself to the Panasonic, having been very impressed by a friend's bread made in one. My OH has always been the type to buy cheap (and often buy twice), but as I don't restrict how much he spends on his hobbies I stuck out for the best.

Problems with my wrists make kneading difficult, so I rarely make hand made bread, but if wanting something more exotic like pumpkin seed and olive bread I make it in the BM and bake it in the oven. I recommend spending the extra and buying one with the facility to add raisins, seeds etc.
The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)
  • DP has just bought me one after I pined for one! It's a Morphy Richards, it cost £57, has 12 functions including fast bake (58mins) and it also makes pizza dough, cake, jams, marmalade etc. I love it. It's great, and since we got it we hasn't bought any bread as shop bought bread just doesn't compare in my eyes now! Not entirely sure what's cheaper (buying a loaf - I used to buy farmhouse bread at £1.45) or home made bread but I love my breadmaker nonetheless!

  • I bought a second-hand non-Panny in a charity shop for fifteen quid a while back. It makes fantastic bread. It doesn't have a dispenser but bleeps at you when the machine is ready for seeds/fruit/'whatever to be added. For ciabatta or focaccia-type bread you can just use the "dough" setting and then shape and bake in the oven.

I generally use bread-flour but have got away with half plain and half bread-four with no discernible difference.

Honestly, it's the best fifteen quid I've ever spent.
  • Another panasonic fan here,I've tried a few other makes, but nothing beats the panasonic, this thread here might help you too.

  • Cheers Peeps, going to get the Panasonic.

What's the cheapest method to make a loaf ? Some people saying the ready mix's in Aldi's were cheap ?

Do you just ' throw' it all in and add water ?
  • Aldi ready mix are handy to have on Standbye, they are the cheapest of the ready mixes, but it's cheaper to make your own, just follow the instructions that come with your bread maker, I use supermarket own brand strong bread flour and the little sachets of yeast,
The panasonic SD 2500 is down to £84 on Amazon just now.
