Sorry for not replying last night, internet problems.
PDVD still not working.
I uninstalled it and re-installed it this morning again to no avail doing it offline this time.
I am giving up on the basis that something unknown may have my computer contaminated for which an example is web page preview not working on Microsoft word plus some other web related features which appear to work well with the likes of OPen Office.
I have an external DVD player linked to my TV. It will have to do.Actually I have some notes concerning copy protected DVDs and a possible conflict with your set up, but I don't have them with me(as you can imagine).
I shall hold onto your PDVD until whenever next you get chance.
Cheers.

Did you remove PowerDVD 6?
Which version of DirectX® is installed on your computer?0 -
I have Direct X 9.0c.
I removed PDVD 6 and replaced it with PDVD 5 as per your suggestion.
Just done a scan with Ewido now AVG anti-virus.
The worst it could bring up was some tracking cookies and one mega malware thing I know to be associated with an ftp program I use which I have had quarantined.

I'm stumped as to why you can't play DVD video. Are the drivers and firmware on your disc player up to date?; http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=uk&cs=19&l=en&s=gen
Is DMA mode applied?

I had similar problems with my LG DVD RW drive- it wouldn't play DVD's or write to the disk. I installed a freeware programm (from www.cliprex.com ) but it came with loads of adverts etc which you tend to get on freeware programs, which I had to labourously remove one by one. This may not be a complete fix but it worked for me (the write function was a bug with my nero software). Plus my father-in-law had similar problems as you with free DVD's - he eventually saw the light and I pursuaded him to buy a new computer from ebuyer (only £415 - Acer T681 plus 17" TFT Screen) - can supply quick find codes if need be - Though this isn't the cheapest way to solve a problem but fun for me.
How confident are you at upgrading your memory? I agree with Donnie 256mb will slow your machines performance.'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' : Member number 632

I guess I will never find out what caused my DVD to stop working but I got it fixed by wiping clean my pc and reinstalling all my programs one by one checking to see if my dvd was working after each install.
My original installation even had PowerDVD 4 with it, a program I had never heard of until from here which I may have uninstalled when I first saw it.
To keep a long story shorter, I found Acronis to be part reason for it. When I installed it as the first program after wiping my pc clean my dvd kept working despite uprading from sp1 to sp2 again and continues to work now.
Needless to say I am keeping automatic updates and all my power settings at default levels - I am not going through this again.
Just a little tit-bit info for the masses, Donnie especially.

that's what I am using.
I can also use Windows Media Player if I want but I kinda prefer PDVD.
It came preloaded with my original windows pc setups so I didn't need a serial number.
I found out it contained PDVD 4 when I opened up its contents and thought to myself, ah-ha!
I had to swipe my pc several times I admit to find my culprit killer.

It's PowerDVD 4 that supplies the DVD Video codec to WMP.
Anyway, the upside is that your computer is probably running better than it was before.0 -
Ain't disagreeing there.
Before I actively sought out all the updates.
Now, automatic updates are probably best.
Stick to PDVD is the impression I am getting from you.
What about music? PDVD or Windows Media Player?
I shall be watching it still.
