DVD Video Not Working On CD Drive

Didn't realise this until very recently when I bought the Driving Standards Agency DVD video and found it crashing my pc and refusing to allow any of my other applications until I forced it to shut down then reboot.
Since I have found another DVD video which I knew used to work which no longer does.
I know the difference between a DVD ROM and a DVD Video but I am stuck.
WinXP2 home Edition
Intel Celeron CPU 2.4Ghz
256MB Ram
27.9GB hard-drive
Direct X 9.0 c enabled
Intel 82852/ 82855 GME graphics controller.
I am starting to wonder if my purchase of my DVD player was a mistake.
My pc plays both CD's and DVD's.
Certainly does DVD Rom's now.
Or is there a setting in my media player needs?
Just checked Windows Media Player.
My pc does have DVD video ticked for play but doesn't appear to pick mine up.
I have a DVD/CD-RW drive.
I'd love to know what is missing.
I do have Direct CD installed.
Hope this is not an intereference or is there something to do with country codes, an item I would need directions from.
I am based in the UK.
Might AVS be my solution?

I will a certainly willing to try it but could do with some responses first.

If I fail to thank you individually, I am sorry. Your advice was appreciated but may not have been 100% the result I was after.

It could be that you don't have a DVD decoder installed, though it shouldn't crash without one. You should purchase more system RAM, especially as the memory needed for video/graphics has to taken from there.
With your current system, I would recommend that you use an old version of Cyberlink's PowerDVD. I recommend PowerDVD 5 from here; http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=powerdvd
Check your privates messages for detailed installation instructions.0 -
you could download K-Lite Codec Pack and then you will be able to play most stuff (not all put most )http://www.codecguide.com/there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0

Hi Donnie,
I got your private message.
I have two codec packs installed - VideoLan and PowerDVD 6.
All my DVD's are standard stuff - free (from newspapers), one is a Driving Standards DVD, all must be copywrited in some form. Don't understand what you mean by Copy Protected DVD's. Copying dvd's not my thing.
Below are the specs of my pc obtained from your recommended site alexnolan - http://www.alexnolan.net/software/sysspec.htm
For privacy I have removed who my computer is made by but everything you need is here including BIOS information.
Hope it helps.

How long ago was it that I sent that private message?
I appear to have erased all my notes on your case. I have to, because my private message box is always filled to overflowing.
Plus, I'm sitting on a beach in Thailand at the moment.
Won't be back in the UK for a month.
You could probably do with getting rid of some of the codec packs that you have installed and stopping some programs from starting up when you turn the computer on.
You don't have a great deal of system memory.
Sorry that I can't help more now.0 -
I've got the opposite!!!
My CD RW/DVD ROM drive works for dvd's and not CD's???!!!
Any ideas?Girls are gonna love the way I toss my hair. Boys are gonna hate the way I seem.
I would rather drown with you than watch the surf with someone else0 -

I removed Videolan, tried my DVD again to no joy.
The only codec packs I have now are the PowerDVD you recommended and Media Player.
I dare not remove Windows Media Player for which I have the latest version - no11
and I have just placed my check box against its play dvd video mark in its options.
All windows media player options have been left at their defaults.
The way I know of what programs run in my background is by what I see in my tray.
Admittedly there are two programs there I could do without starting up whenever I boot up but they have no programs options preventing them from restarting again.
For you to be coming in here whilst being on holiday in Thailand shows some devotion, or is it boredom and a need to have some fun on some of the other threads.

Actually I have some notes concerning copy protected DVDs and a possible conflict with your set up, but I don't have them with me(as you can imagine).
Commercial DVD Video is, in general, copy protected.
Maybe the person who forwarded you my PM to them, still has them.
I'm reasonably sure that my advice to you was to remove PowerDVD 6 and to use an older version. ie PowerDVD 5 or 4.0 -
Check your PMs promptly. That means now.0

My Windows operating system does not recognise .rar extensions.
Renaming the extension to .exe used to work but with your recommendation (PM) now gives me just a disappearing command prompt type box.
I am not losing hope.
