It was never set up as a means of being boastful.....I did it to highlight to good that can be done for people by small acts of kindness..

Its great that so many of you have posted experiences of both being the giver or being the recipient and in reading some of yoour stories if its made one person think of doing something kind for someone else then I consider it to have been worthwhile.

Makes you frightened to say/post anything in case your intentions are misconstrued as being 'boastful'.

I was enjoying reading the thread, we always hear the bad about everything it's nice to hear some good, l say keep posting otherwise the misery guts will win.

    Happy moneysaving all.
  • I'm sorry, I'm sure this wasn't your intention, but you last post brought to mind this song.......If I can help somebody....

Doing good deeds shouldn't be posted or boasted about - you just do them because you want to not for the "well done"s or the "that was lovely"s.

There is a Good Deed Feed in the free Metro newspaper where people write or text in to publicly thank those who have done good deeds. I do prefer reading that.

Lol my Mam loves Nat King Cole and that sort of music, so that song is very familiar! Probably heard it at home or at my grandparents before.

I often read the "what freebies have you received today "thread on the other board...and never have I thought of it as boastful but in some ways thats exactly what some are implying.

I also often give my opinion or a link to something when someone asks for advice or help in finding something...its not exactly what I would term as a random act of kindness but the fact that hopefully I and anyone else who posts anything on these forums that helps someone with a dilema or situation or has taken the time to offer words of comfort to someone is surely a good thing if it brightens their day.

Airing a marriage split or a teen pregnancy dilema or a "my journey to debt feedom"...etc would not always be my style but I understand the need or wishes for many posters on forums to do suchlike and dont condone them for doing so....if there are others out there who still want to share their acts or receipts of kindness then those who want to read them can and those who are not so happy about the styling dont have to.

  • I think that this is a lovely thread and some lovely RAC's.

I am posting about a RAC that someone did to me, my next door neighbough's dog died and he had just ordered a lot of dog food for him so he asked if we wanted it for our dog, we accepted greatfully and offered to pay for it but he refused. So this week when we do our shopping he will be getting a couple of bottles of wine that i know he will like. He pretty much keeps himself to himself as his wife died a few years ago and his family dont bother with him.

I also do RAC's for other people too so i think my RAC's have been passed forward to me :-)

I hope I'm not a misery guts sassy, but I do things and then never give them another thought.

Reading this thread has though reminded me of one which was funny in its outcome.

Freezing cold winter night, deep in the countryside, no street lighting. I approached a tiny hump backed bridge to see in my headlights a very elderly man trying to mount his bicycle and falling off repeatedly. His overcoat was very thin. Certainly not suitable for that weather.

Of those queuing to pass the bridge, only one asked if they could help, a woman. I explained help was coming in the form of my husband as I couldn't get the bike in my car.

Bike put in husband's car, front wheels over the back seats and man in mine. I could smell the alcohol now. We arrived at his address and I take who was his daughter gave him Hell, shouting at where he had been etc.. No thank you for bringing him home, but there you go.

Funny thing was daylight. I have no idea where this man had been riding his bike, but husband's car was encrusted with farm muck and I mean muck.

Maybe the old guy had a secret woman on a farm whom he visited.

Judging by the reception from his daughter, I wouldn't have blamed him.
  • My son works in a Supermarket and a colleague who had been working on the till was serving their customer who was saying they were a bit short this Christmas, and as they went to pay for their shopping, the customer behind said "here let me" and paid for the shopping. Not a huge amount but obviously enough to make a difference to the person in question who was very grateful.

(sorry a bit vague as the don't want to be identified).

Today for me picking up a reduced Christmas tree in Homebase and some decorations the shop had run out of bags and boxes and they had bought quite a bit. I had an empty Sports Bag in my car so offered it to them for their things. They accepted as they had no transport, yes you guessed I also gave them a lift home with their things.

I'd do and have done things like this Christmas or not and don't think twice about it.

Sometimes it's the little things which make you smile such as the customer in my sons work who let me sneak in front of them whilst they were loading their shopping on to the belt so I could ask him to check his Secret Santa present was ok. They just smiled and said it was cheating me getting it. He chose it honestly.

We were only a few seconds checking, then I disappeared but smiles all round when I was gone.
  • The discussions in this thread remind me of the Friends episode where Phoebe tries to prove to Joey that there is such a thing as a 'selfless good deed'...but fails!

This thread and the disagreement about motives reminds me of the episode of Friends where Phoebe is trying to find a truly altruistic thing to do and can't find one :D
