Nationwide Breach of DPA

I got one third way through the letter before giving up - this is a very good example of how not to write a letter of complaint.
OP take the money and move on.
Unless you can prove that this has lead to you suffering financially then it is by far the best offer you will get.0 -
Nothing to say about the letter (my eyes my eyes!)
but the op does state:but just before you read the case details they did state by phone that they had my details of me from my parents accounts which cannot be correct as neither my parents banked with Nation wide and secondly they stated it was dated in 1996 in which i was under the age of 16 and my parents have never opened account for me at that age.
Have nationwide ever been part of anyone else?0 -
As people have said, £300 is a very fair offer, you seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill here.
An error was made, it's now being put right and you will be getting £300 just before Christmas. Be happy, not greedy.0 -

There was a merger with Anglia BS around 1987.0 -
Have nationwide ever been part of anyone else?
No, but they merged with about 100 building societies over the years: http://www.nationwide.co.uk/about_nationwide/membership_matters/history/mergers.htm0 -
Firstly Thank you for taking the time to comment on my thread. Secondly i have read through all the comments and apologize that the initial post was very long. but i felt if i detailed as much as possible i would get much more detailed response rather than "OP we need more information"
on to the comments, i should clarify that i have closed the account at nationwide.
Secondly to the poster regarding Tax. for the past six years of saving this X amount it has been in a 0% interest savings account and since this account is now closed it made no interest.
now on to the comments regarding my emotions relayed in the letter. the reason i have done this is because breach of Data Protection cannot be expressed by merely giving the facts of the breach but also the emotion effects it has towards the individual effected.
@Esoog and the commentators that have stated they would have my records or my parents records, i had already thought of this and we have never ever banked with Nationwide or their merged partners. My father was very old school and always felt money should be with him at all times. the only account he ever had was post office account for his pension. My mother only has an account with Halifax which has not merged with NW.
My first account at the age of 16 was with Halifax and then HSBC and Barclay's, i had a savings account with Abbey again non-merged with NW.
finally and apologies again if this has become long winded. but to the comment's that feel i am making a mountain out of a molehill. the fact NW never had access to my previous address and the fact that during the approval process not one individual had noticed that the address's do not match and the fact that i had to chase this up and i had to take time off to talk about their failings and i had to show them their mistakes. i have asked them to find out where they got my previous address details as they only 2 scenarios i can imagine is that the employee who entered my details knows me (but i do not know her) or secondly they went in to credit file again this should not happen as this was not a credit account for them to check that.
I am sorry this is long response while their is no financial loss occurred to me this is simply because of my persistence and my nature or ensuring things are done properly. £300 maybe a justifiable figure (i do not know hence my question & query here) but i felt the fact that NW never had access to my previous address unless they did the listed things above and the fact they had breached the DPA and not once did any of them spot a such (to me) a very big mistake.
all i wanted to know was if people on MSE felt £300 was a correct amount.
Thank you all for your help.0 -
£300 seems more than reasonable.
How are you proposing that Nationwide got your old address if you've never had an account there. There has to be an account that you've forgotten about.0 -

Your suggestion is the most likely.0 -

You didn't have to take any time off to deal with this, you chose to. £300 is also more than reasonable given you've grossly exaggerated the emotional effects of it. There was no catastrophe here whatsoever.
Don't get me wrong - I don't blame you for trying it to see if you can get more. While a few people on here claim to sit on some kind of pedestal, if there was a (legal!) way for me to get more money out of my bank then I'd do so without hesitation. But while I have no problem with trying to get more, I have a big problem with insisting you deserve more - which many people on here do (I know you didn't).0 -
Have nationwide ever been part of anyone else?
Nationwide Building Society acquired Derbyshire Building Society on 1 December 2008 , Dunfermline Building Society in 2009 ,Cheshire Building Society on 15 December 2008 and Staffordshire and Portman a few years before this
