Nokia Lumia or Huawei Ascend?
Choice restricted by price, so these two phones currently on offer at CPW are the two I'm trying to decide between.
I've lost my phone (Huawei Blaze) and need to replace it quite quickly. I'm sort of used to Android but my friends favour Windows, and think I should go with the Nokia.
Both phones have a 4" screen and the other minor differences such as size of memory, cameras etc. are not really of much importance. I want to stay with O2 as I have 100% reception where I live. My main use is texting with very occasional phone calls.
After reading online reviews of both phones I'm still undecided, and wonder if anybody here can offer any comments on these phones that might help me decide which one to buy.
I'm going to Australia in the Spring, and wonder if it's possible to buy a PAYG sim card on arrival to use in the phone whilst I'm there? This would be the decision-maker for me.

If you are used to Android why go with Windows because your friends favour it? It's not like you can't ring/text them or anything. There are some truly incredible Android phone bargains out there at the moment, the Motorola Moto G being the obvious one. The specs of this phone blow both the phones you are looking at out of the water.

Doesn't appear to be available any more. Shame, because it had an even bigger screen.0 -

It keeps coming in and out of stock but normally comes into stock early mornings. Plus the y usually have them in stock at your local Tesco store (but ring ahead first to avoid a wasted journey). If you aren't desperate for a new phone immediately it may be worth setting up a stock alert with Tesco and checking the site every morning. This phone is £135 SIM free from Amazon (and that's a bargain!) and this phone can be very easily unlocked for £2 by a code from ebay so the Tesco price is fantastic. The Moto G is frankly light years ahead of both the phones you are considering. HTH.
Sample review (this is one of the most highly reviewed phones ever to be honest)

Thank you. Will do as you suggest, as I can manage without a phone for a while. Will I be able to use this in Australia?0

Personally I would choose the Lumia 520 for the apps Nokia bring to the phone. You cant get these apps on non-Nokia WP handsets. I also find Windows better than Android. It is just my opinion though and not the majority.0

I went for a 620, if you travel worldwide maps/satnav.0

I used to run an IT department and have used Android phones for some time till last year. I still have an Android tablet that I use regularly. But my last handset was a Lumia 720 which I still think is one of the best in the range.
My comments are as follows.
1. Lumia 720 battery life far superior to any Androids I have had.
2. More apps on Android
3. Lumia Nokia maps are brilliant. They kick in immediately and crucially you can use the Lumia as a Sat Nav without using any data whatsoever. Also if you download the relevant maps over wi-fi, you can use the Sat Nav facility in all sort of locations eg Turkey without data charges.
4. Integrates beautifully with Outlook.
5. Conversely, you have no automatic sync with Gmail or Google Calendar or Google contacts. You can export between the two but it has the problems associated with running two systems.
6. Nokia camera app that takes 5 shots and allows you to edit to get the best with a mix of the 5 is pretty good and automatic back up to SKYDRIVE is worth having too.
7. You need less speed unbelievably for windows phones rather than Androids as their OS seems to be more efficient.
What you are really having to compare is Android -v- Windows 8 as the first choice. Having decided that, then the handset choice is secondary, with obviously a greater choice of manufacturers in the Android market.
All I can say is I have had no regrets getting a Windows handset. The 720 is a beautifully made piece of kit, better than the 800/700/600/500 ranges and I would argue on a par with the 900s as well.
Hope this helps.0 -
Betamax was a better system than VHS, and disappeared from the retail market.
Windows may be a better operating system for mobiles than android but it does not have critical mass so will fail. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
