Question about cars

Hi all,

Quick question to all experienced folk out there. We are moving into our new house next week. The owners of the property have already moved out but left their old car in the driveway. We only discovered it last week. It doesn't look like they are planning to move it because we queried this through the solicitors and they aren't getting any response from them with regards to this car.

Our EA can't get any response either, which only makes me suspect that I am right in assuming they aren't planning to move it.

If anyone had any experience with similar matters, could you please let me know what options we have if the car is still there when we move in?

Obviously, I don't want to have to bear the cost of removing the car abandoned by previous owners!

Many thanks.

    Have you exchanged?

Your solicitor should definitely be chasing this - not your EA.

I would be tempted to report the car as abandoned on your driveway. I doubt very much it'll be down to you to remove it just because it's on your driveway. Not like it's yours. Am sure there's an abandoned car phone number or email, etc if you look on your (new) council's website.

Very unusual situation! I assume it's an old banger that the former owners want to get shot of? Report it to the solicitors - the seller needs to collect it.
  • We have exchanged. Completion next week. Solicitors and EA are chasing sellers' solicitors for a response. Both with no success.

    Thanks, all.
  • They have until you complete to move it, I wouldn't worry about it till then.

The completion is on Monday. Today is Thursday. Although, in theory, that's still few more days, it's more the lack of response that's worrying me. Our solicitors have been chasing them for the confirmation for a while now :(

it will take them less than 2 minutes to move the car, so you have several days until you complete!

Perhaps they have moved to their new property but don't have enough room until they take back the van they hired to move so they are keeping one car at their old property until Monday, or they have one more load of stuff to take which they plan to do over the weekend. There could be many reasons why the car is on their driveway. Remember it is still theirs.

If it hasn't moved by the time you have the keys then do as others have said, push it into the road and let your solicitors know. It will be fine!

Write them a letter saying that you will be charging storage of £50 a day.

    That should focus their minds.
  • So they have until Monday to move it then......nothing you can do until then....Probably will be collected at the weekend.

If its still there when you move in you have a number of options, but not many if you don't want to break the law.

Our local council specifically state they will not remove abandoned vehicles from private land.
