Would you leav your young family and go abroad to work?

  • I'm not quite getting this, sorry.

He was made redundant, he started contracting? Yes? So he's likely to be back working shortly? It is not a choice of work abroad or unemployment? It is a choice of work here or there?

Just curious as it may make a difference to some people's opinions.

If my partner decided to work abroad and leave me "holding the baby" for purely financial reasons, I think I might tell them not to come back!!

I'm not one to hold my OH back when it comes to long-term career prospects or something but it doesn't seem like this experience will lead to better work on his return? If it's just for a bit of cash, honestly, I would be hugely insulted!! I can't see why someone who actually likes their family life would consider this for these reasons unless they have significant financial problems.

    Seriously .....

For the sake of 9 months you would rather he stayed at home and miss an opportunity to earn double what he could here.

Would you not rather ssacrifice 9 months of your life together to improve your standard of life, or pay off X amount off the mortgage??

What if it was the difference of living day to day worrying about whether you'd have an unexpected bill that caused issues, or instead savings in the bank so the family had piece of mind that they could deal with anything unexpected?

I would consider it for long-term career prospects, but not just for a lump sum amount of money. If work pays so much better there, why wouldn't we think about moving long-term?

I'm not a particularly clingy partner, my OH is actually working overseas at the moment and I study full-time at the moment so I'm not mobile. But we're both going to benefit in the long-term from these experiences. It's not just for some lump cash sum. I guess I don't think money is that important all things considered...

No, I'd rather have a cheaper house. I'd rather my husband was at home even on minimum wage - we'd cut our cloth accordingly, together.

Lots of people work away - and for much longer periods of time. Think of the military, oil-rig workers, scientists on expeditions, ice-road truckers, astronauts.

Being able to come home every evening is a luxury.

Why can't the wife cope at home with 3 children? Surely she should be able run her own household?

    Kids are in school.

Noth worth all the disruption for 6-9 months.

also - He would be home every 5-6 weeks for a week or so.

It is worth it if the kids are young. 6 months in a foreign school would be a fabulous experience.

The whole family should make the move!

My best mateahas lived in 3 countries now thanks to her husband's work and never regretted it.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I'd be less than impressed if I'd decide to share parenting with somebody as an equal partner and they decided to b****r off for nearly a year and leave me to do it alone.

The children are his responsibility as much as they are his wife's, how would he feel if she upped and left him as a single dad of 3?
