I'd respect someone who considered that supporting his family was important rather than letting strangers do it. The most important thing a parent can do is to put a roof over their children's heads and food in their bellies.

It doesn't say he is not currently supporting his family, though (unless I missed it).

Neither is it an either/or situation. You can work without going away to do it. As I said that is not a situation I'd want for my family. I appreciate it works for others but it is not for me. I could cope but I wouldn't want to.
  • Look at it this way. When you're on your death bed, will you remember:

    a) the memories of your children when they were young
    b) that time you went to a hot place to work for a long time

I couldn't replace bedtime stories and songs for a smaller mortgage

It all depends on how financially stable the family are. If I was in a half decent job at home with no money worries I would stay put but if I was young and we were trying to save for a home of our own I would sacrifice a couple of years to get the extra cash behind us.No two couples are going to be the same though so he needs to be talking to his missus

    Temp.

A bit of extra in his pocket, but he was made redundent a few months back.

He see's this a option to make a little extra cash.

No then. Whilst he has the opportunity to make a little cash, he needs to go out and carve himself and his family a future. It's not worth the sacrifice for so little reward. If there had been a job in the UK at the end then fair enough but to do it for nothing...

The OP says his friend was made redundant a couple of months ago, nothing about his getting another job since then so I assume that he's unemployed.
  • Yes - he is unemployed at the moment.

To be honest, im with him on this.

    I don't see 6-9 months a big deal.

However, his wife may struggle to cope alone.

The first post says " if you could make double what you make in the UK?" so I assumed currently working.

I was comparing to his last job.

So where does the earning double come in? Answered above by the time I'd asked.

Could his family not go with him?

    Kids are in school.

Noth worth all the disruption for 6-9 months.

also - He would be home every 5-6 weeks for a week or so.
