OK derrick - specific to the TV you listed, it's only got one SCART, so it doesn't really suit your needs if you really want to hold on to your VCR. Check the connections at the back of your PVR - does it have a TV SCART, and a VCR SCART? If so, I MAY be right in saying that you can connect the VCR through the PVR into the TV, and it might automatically switch. Don't take my word for it though.
I've got no problem with what you propose to do, but you asked if these new TVs will make your picture worse - they won't. They'll just show up the problems more easily, for the simple reason that they're being 'blown up'.
As long as you can accept that, go ahead and try it.

    Thanks for that.

Yes the PVR,(Humax 9150T), has 2 scarts, TV & VCR.

My TV has 3 scarts, I have one for the PVR, one for the VCR and one for a STB.

With this set up I can record 2 channels on the PVR, one channel on the VCR and watch a channel via the STB, remember the TV is analogue, I very rarely use the VCR it is just for back up, I am pretty sure I could buy a double scart connector if need be.

The reason I am contemplating a new TV is I am looking for a larger screen, there is nothing wrong with the picture on this Toshiba 33" CRT.

Re the posters talking about "old Tech", most TV's come with at least 1 scart, so the "old" tech is still there, there must be 10's thousands of VCR's ad DVD recorders out there and all, (most), will have scart connections, and as such the picture should be adequate or better than adequate when connected via scart, TV listing magazines still print the Videoplus numbers,(and they still work, although not the PDC as that analogue signal was turned off), that are used to programme VCR's.

Further to "old tech" not working with "new" tech, I purchased my computer 12 years ago along with a 17" CRT monitor and it's only connection is via VGA, about 6 months ago I upgraded the monitor,(again just for a larger screen),to a 24" TFT, LED model, it's connections are HDMI, DVI and VGA,(whey, there goes that "old tech"again), obviously I have connected via VGA and there is no problem with the screen display, the point is if manufacturers make products with the "old tech" then they should work, and in the case of my computer do, so I doubt very much if there will be a problem with any new TV I purchase, although I will ask the question re scart connection, and if told it is OK, I will always have SoGA to fall back on.

Surely the VCR will be next to useless as it will only have an analogue tuner?
Regardless, I maintain that SCART connections are not suitable for modern HDMI enabled TVs.

That is why the VCR is run through a STB first.

My TV is analogue but run through the PVR then scarted out it receives all digital channels, just as I can put the TV on another channel and watch digital tv through a STB, I am not throwing good equipment away just so I can upgrade to "new tech",which is supercede nearly daily!

If modern TV's are not suitable for scart connection why include them?

derrick, you're right, it will work. No one ever said it won't. I, and others, have warned you that the picture might not look as good, because you're viewing it on a bigger screen. When you get the TV and set it up (calibration is a whole other subject!) you might be perfectly happy with it. But if you're not, the SCART leads are the bottleneck, not the TV.
SCART, and VGA are there exactly for the reasons you state, for using existing equipment with.
Your life would be a lot easier, IMO with one set top box that records, a YouView box for example. Your new TV will have a FreeviewHD tuner, so you could watch that, record 2 things on the Youview. You could even keep the VCR and STB connected in case you want to record something else too!
  • I bought an LG42LN578V Smart TV from Curry's last week for £429, absolutely love it for the price! The picture and sound are fantastic! Still getting to grips with that magic remote!

No I am not! I am looking at getting a new TV solely for a larger screen,(and maybe the smart aspect, although I am not definite on this part of it) and as TV's are digital these days I will just put the Toshiba CRT into another room, it will get used but not as often.

As we've already told you (over and over), attaching a large flatscreen TV via SCART will just highlight all the imperfections in the (at best) poor quality standard definition picture you'll be able to receive.

Anyway, you do whatever you want, I'm not about to repeat myself again.

    41 posts? Ridiculous.
