put it(gift or present) in context

    this was said.

his hints were something to use, something to consume and a gift rather than a present

I think what he is saying don't get me the TAT you women give each other each year give me something usefull I can eat or drink.

What did he get for someone last year?

(By the way I bow out of this sort of nonsence in the office)

I spotted some lovely carved wooden bowls which I'm giving this year, they are small and could be used for paperclips or at home for 'nibbles'. They were a real bargain, and DH may nick them for his SS as he has to buy for a chap, and mine is much easier to buy for.

I think this is exactly the sort of thing he is hinting DON'T get.

The men in my old office have been known to stick a £10 note in a card, for 'a drink,' when they drew a fellow male.

He won't care what you get him. Just buy him a bottle or something amusing from Hawkins Bazaar.
"On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.
  • Buy him a nice floral dress or something (2nd hand).

Maybe that's why I often go the money in the card route.

It depends on whether you normally get "joke" presents or something that the recipient actually wants.

Personally I like to buy something that the person would want - this has ranged from a bottle of wine / booze, chocs, big yankee candle (for a female) ,even cigs for a certain person!

It does not really matter what you buy - Secret Santa is a bit of fun. Even if you get bugs and worms (which was a present in my office this year!) it's just a bit of goodwill.

Multi tool. Blokes love multi tools.

I helped my OH choose a secret santa for one of the blokes in her place. He likes to take things apart - PC's and the like, so we bought him a giant set of precision scredrivers and little spanners in a case from TKMaxx - he loved it.
As to blokes not liking wine, I know plenty of blokes who love wine - mostly red wine, but I do not know many blokes who would like chocolates as a present.
Find out what his interests are - is he into sport?
You could go into one of those cheap bookshops - THE Works for instance, and pick up a book or DVD. In fact for a tenner, you could probably buy a whole shelf:D

If you have an Aldi near you, then they have some wine bargains this year.

I would be very happy to receive the Rioja Gran Resrva or the Barolo as a secret santa.
