Bad deal upgrading on orange?

my contract with orange is due to end next week and I want to upgrade to the iPhone 5s. I rang them on Sunday and was told the cheapest deal they could do for me was £49.99 upfront and £45 a month. This is too much so I said no.

Now, I have been lookng and phones4u allow you to go through orange and pay £37 a month and £49 upfront. Why can't orange do this for me as an upgrade seeing as I am an existing customer?! I currently pay £35 a month.

I'm going to give them another call but wondered if anybody had any advice/tips for me? Also, is it best to go into a store or call them?

Thanks!

first off your contract doesnt end, the minimum term does...... are you approaching the end of the min term, your upgrade date, or the last month of the min term (when you can give notice)?

you wont get the best deals from them until the latter, so if this isnt the case, wait and try again then.

also see what deals they will offer you if you move to EE, their new sister net work.

if you still dont get what you want, ask for your pac code, this MAY trigger a better offer, or it may not. Orange are not renound for their great retention offers at the moment.

you can use this code to take your number to another network, but if you dont use it, nothing will happen and your contract will continue until you give them 30 days notice.

look at third party sites like E2 Save and Affordable Mobiles for the best deals, if Orange wont give you what you want.

You will prob get a better upgrade deal through Phones4U, but be aware if you take out a NEW contract with Orange but not with Orange directly, you wont be able to use your pac to keep your number, it needs to be with another provider

PS, you're more likely to get a better offer by calling them, not by going in store

    What is your usage?
Any particular network you don't want?
Do you have money to buy the phone and go for monthly plan?

    Best to go via Quidco/TCB

You should check that you can retain your existing number (assuming you want to of course).

I'm not sure on this but I think Orange is one of those companies that won't let you transfer your number if getting a new contract as opposed to an upgrade.

Possibly someone else could clarify this.

Do you have to/want to stay with Orange?

If you end a contract you can take your number to another network, but you cannot start a new contract with the same provider and continue using your old number. This is the same with all providers and isn't exclusive to orange.

O2 can transfer the number directly from the old O2 contract to a new one.

I did not know this, thanks Grumbler. Good to know as I am on an o2 contract at the moment.
  • hi all thanks for advice. I asked for my PAC code yesterday as I wanted to leave, only to get a phonecall today offering me the phone for free, more minutes and data and cheaper than my current contract! :D
