That's a ludicrous response Emmett and doesn't follow the tone of the thread at all. For the record what is your solution to this problem?

i'm sorry, the tone of the thread unless i missed it, is that beggars are a problem, that they spoil the look of the place, that in fact, they are all fake and actually live in big houses with rich husbands.

and you in particular seem to have a problem with one lady beggar who is "agressive in her demands". tell me, are her demands more aggressive than those corporation and business who spend tens of thousands on advertising that we should give them our money instead?

I agree with that. A lot of charities (certainly the bigger ones) have financial figures you can download from their website, it makes for interesting reading! Personally I don't mind if the gift aided part of my donation goes on admin and governance but that's my limit, beyond that they can get money from someone else. Having worked for a local medical testing company I was appalled to see how the money was spent, so research type charities are a no-no for me.

I have concerns regarding some of the smaller local ones!! I am less than sure that a significant percentage of earnings go to any of the causes. If you think of the tax and other advantages the set up is bound to attract the attention of some of the unscrupulous. The fake beggars are amateurs by comparison.

To be honest, when I saw the title of this thread, I thought that it was a suggestion for upping your income.

Begging happens in most large cities throughout the world. The people who give I would not blame. Maybe they know what it is like to have nothing.

Have to agree. I'm a fairly active charity volunteer and will always give time when I can. It's clear that the smaller charities do struggle to fund anything outside running costs. Some of the problem does lie with the fact that there is such competition for donations that charities must be run like a commercial business, with appropriate remuneration for those in charge.

    I remember two occasions.

One a foreign guy once let rip in the street with one Romania. He stood and told the street behind Marks and Spencer how much in benefits they claim. Then how much North Irish people were allow to claim. There was a lot more for the EU people. She got up and walked away.

Two, a pensioner letting rip at one man. She asked loudly did his benefits not arrive today??? Is that why he was begging in the street?

The Romanians pee and !!!! in the nearest entry they can find. You will see the grannies suddenly having a break and whipping out their mobile phones. The young guys walking up and chatting with the beggars dressed in the timberlands and designer jeans. Its a business not a desperate need for them.

If people want to beg, whether it be foreign nationals or locals, then they are free to do so. I assume if it is illegal what they are doing they would be moved on by the police. It is when they become aggressive and confront you directly to give money that I take umbrage with.

At the end of the day if people do not give them money then they will move on. The bloke on Royal Avenue who plays that strange instrument is quite annoying as he appears to only know one tune and plays it all day long.

Is that the cross between a violin and a trumpet? In fairness to him he gets very little money and are buskers classed with beggers?

ah, great to see. some good old beggar bashing!!

move them on, not in my back yard, dirtying up all the beautiful shops, especially at Christmas, a religious festival of spending.

maybe some guys , maybe in uniform, could along and round up these dirty people and... oh, I dont know... put them in a camp. Oh and when we are it.. could the camp also take, the immigrants, eh... the gays?... maybe the Jews too?

    That's been tried before.
