  • ZhugeEX - Out of curiosity - do you know if this priority system is in place on any other networks - for example do Orange (EE) customers get a higher priority than MNVOs like Asda (on EE)?

I don't know about EE. Sorry.

I would assume there is a similar system in place like O2 but i honestly cannot give a definitive answer.
  • ZhugeEX - OK Thanks. Also I had heard that some of the 999 services had priority over the general public on the public networks even though they (police etc) have their own 999 network Airwave.

Your one month deal cannot be cancelled during the first month, so the initial term is 60 days, then 30 thereafter.

i cancelled my one month deal as i was in the 14 day cooling off period and also kept the number with the pac. went to 3. so glad tesco mobile internet was the worst iv ever experienced. no signal in the centre of town.

Is this actually true? I remember Giffgaff vehemently denying this. I would be really interested in seeing the evidence for this claim. My bro uses O2 and I use Giffgaff so I will be able to check next time I'm at this place.

Exactly what I wondered, as this mention of tier-ing only ever crops up informally on forums. If everyone's only ever heard from someone else on forums and the like, then it could be a bit of a "urban myth" that keeps getting passed on. I asked Tesco about it and they said (quote): "no you should have the same service".

It most certainly does exist - originally called ACOLC on the landline network, it allows network operators to effectively segment the network to different classes of user, from everyone, right down to emergency services and maintenance engineers (usually when the network is rolled out).

With mobile, there are subsets within the HLR and VLR (Home and Visitor Location Registers) so that roaming users can be blocked whilst natives are OK, and Virtual Operators can be zoned out with the press of a key, or given a lower priority against the home network users.
  • The government paper on the subject of tiering mobile phone users is available for anyone interested at -

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/62242/resilient_comms_guidance.pdf

Each mobile phone has a built in code on the sim card from 1 to 15 and Joe public's phone is usually from 1 to 9. Those deemed to need use of a mobile phone during emergencies have a code from 10 to 15.
The masts can then be programmed to filter any number groups in any area.

I assume that the same system can be used by network providers to give business and contract customers priority over PAYG customers on cheaper tariffs when the network is busy.

I've been happily using Tesco mobile for a couple of years - the customer service, value for money and general coverage has been excellent there is maybe one location nearby where I don't get coverage (even though doing a post code check on O2 shows no problem) otherwise I am quite happy with Tesco.
