Trying to keep calm here. With parent who is literally reading the daily mail headline, that foreign aid should be used to help every single flood risk property here, and can't see anything at all wrong with that.
That's silly. We all know the solution to the floods is repealing the gay marriage act.Moving on to safer subjects like smoking in cars with kids.
What about smoking in cars with westies? :eek:0 -
Our neighbours over the road read the Mail, we know because they mentioned seeing us in it....but they are that sort of people. They have 4 cars (x5, s4 cabrio, treet ka and punto) and don't use their drive or garage and one day daughter parked hers half way across our drive making it pretty much impossible for us to get in and out then went out with her mates all day not leaving the key. I'm afraid I was so annoyed I rang the council and she got ticketed. Now they no longer talk to us.
I really miss the you magazine. My das used to read ALL the Sunday papers. Now we rarely get any papers. Sometimes I remember to get one free if I'm In waitrose but rarely, Shame because they are handy with the woodburner. I buy them on the basis of which is thickest.0 -

Did anyone watch the Life of Rock with Brian Pern last night? Very silly but quite funny too. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Haven't watched it, but if you tell us it's un-missable, I'll catch it on iplayer.0 -

I wouldn't call it unmissable. It is quite silly, yet clever at the same time. It depends on whether you like really silly humour and Peter Gabriel references. Parts of it I found really funny, parts a bit cringy. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Leeds Castle is in Leeds! Perfectly sensible, really (-:Well it has become a good meeedya story init, Govt scrabbling, blamestorming etc.
This morning it was let slip that all of 60 houses had been flooded on the levels which suddenly put into perspective the calls to spend £10m dredging compared to the number of homes that money could protect spent for example on the banks of the Thames or Severn.
Flood damage and risk isn't just about houses, though - also about businesses, roads, train lines, schools, other non-residential buildings, too.Doozergirl wrote: »Watching a news article this morning, around 60 houses are flooded on the levels - land which was wetland for thousands of years? If £10 million is being pumped (excuse the pun) into trying to keep them dry, wouldn't it just be better for the long term to allow the water to reclaim the land and buy the villagers out? If we are generally going to be getting wetter? They can't be getting all that much farming done.
It's been wetlands for a very long time - the medieval monks managed to keep bits dry, though, so it clearly isn't rocket science....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
My secret fear that this thread consists of just me and two or three people with multiple personality disorder grows stronger by the day.
I agree with me....
er...
I mean you, obviously.PasturesNew wrote: »As I understand it King Canute sat there to PROVE he couldn't get the sea to stop coming in... not the opposite as most retellings imply

With you there, it's obviously a good idea. Like pickling the little sods in gin, or giving them whisky if they won't sleep.vivatifosi wrote: »Lir, I hadn't even heard of the Somerset Levels before this. It's a geography lesson for me as much as anything else. I'm guessing that they are naturally marshy and low lying.
Have you not? If you go to Glastonbury, there's a great view from the tor, including the levels. At the moment, obviously, it's more of a sea view or lake view, though!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I've never been to Glastonbury either. At least I've heard of that though. I've been to Bath several times as the company that I used to work for had its HQ there, but really haven't been to Somerset much at all. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
