I wondered if CK meant because he runs a taxi firm, so liability higher as carrying fare paying passengers.

Not in my own car, although I am licensed by 2 authorities; one as a Dual Driver (Private Hire/Hackney) and the other as Hackney Carriage only. All cars booked through the taxi office are licensed as Hack/PHV in one of those two authorities, and are insured to council requirements.

When I filled out the forms in 2003ish to apply, it was a case of send form to council, receive license. There are now CRB checks for all drivers, plus a strict test for new drivers (which thankfully, I've never had to do!). Private Hire doesn't require any knowledge testing at all, nor does the second district I'm licensed in since 2008.

My own car is used for the purpose of transporting people in connection with another business, therefore it needs public liability. Because the car is not contracted to a paid driver, there is an exemption to the laws.

On band vehicles, we get around the PHV rules on my other company by supplying self-drive band vehicles through one company (that can be hired as self-drive), then drivers through a completely separate company. This is where the terms 'to the public' and 'for hire with driver' come into play, and we have written confirmation that we are exempt from the licensing authority in question (which isn't one I'm licensed in), with confirmation that they will write to us should this situation change.

It's confusing (licensing naturally is), but although it may seem strange, we're acting perfectly legally in how we operate. For general taxi use, for your own safety, I would advise using a licensed firm.

Just been on trying to sort out everything online and wondering if the internet's really that good for financial matters. By the time you've remembered the 3rd 5th and 6th letters of your third pet's middle name which you once thought you'd remember forever you end up worried if you'll be frozen out of your bank or email account forever and have to hire a hacker to get back into your account.

Oh yes somebody in the states is sending emails from my email account  to all his students who're emailing back in frustration about him not getting back in touch with them when they reply. How's this even possible?

I accidentally tried to spend some money using my bank debit card instead of credit card... easy mistake, they both look the same. Because I'm in a different country they opened a fraud case and even turned down a regular bill payment. All sorted now,but not without the frustration of a 40 minute international call.

I was absolutely convinced someone had cloned my account or something, turns out I'm the guilty party

Zag, was it Yahoo? Just seen in The Register that they've issued a security alert. Seems they have problems. Again...

I've had a few issues with Yahoo mail over last weeks too.

Using Gmail for nearly everything now, as I've lost my confidence in their data protection!

    ....Won't fly.....Iceland?
    Yup. It takes several days...
Ferry Harwich to Esbjerg (Denmark); train through to tip of Denmark (Hirtshals) and then ship goes twice a week to Iceland, via the Faroe Islands (she stopped 3 days there, writing off a car while she was there) - you get to the Faroes then stay there (if you want) - 3 days or a week later you catch the next ferry which goes to Iceland. You arrive in Iceland on the far side of the island from Rejkavik so it's a 9 hour bus/car journey.
Then reverse on the way back, this time only a few hours in the Faroes. As you do.

Just to update you all, I've bought some Alberto Balsam shampoo for £1 from Morrisons. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's fine usually, I've used it - though I'm not one for being that bothered about my hair, certainly don't do styling and only part dry the stuff so that it doesn't drip down my shoulders.
I don't think so - it would be about £60-£70 each way! So I'll just have to manage.

This strike isn't about pay, though. It's about cutting ticket office staff. Which seems pretty bloody inevitable, because so few people actually buy tickets - we all use pay-as-you-go oysters or travelcards now.

I think anyone that has Bob Crow as their union boss, is not going to get a lot of sympathy.;) from what I recollect they work standard hours with mega money for overtime. Driving something on tracks is a darn sight easier than shifting a large truck round the round of the UK, particularly London. However, it must be easier as truck drivers have to spend night away from home living in a tin box, work 60 hours a week to get less than a tube driver. *must get off my high horse now*

I was given a shopping list, went shopping, and then was told off when I got home.

DW: "Why on earth did you buy an eclair?"

Me: "It was on the list."

    DW: "That says edam."

:rotfl: I'd have a word with lady GDB about heer writing! My mother once rang me and said, 'could you get some mince', which I duly did and popped it into the fridge once I got home. Went into the living room and she then asked if I had forgotten her mints.:p

Good luck to your MiL, gen.

    Smoke Alarms.

Why do they only do the intermittent beep at 02:37 in the morning ?

Why do they never do it during the day, or evening when you can do something about it ?

Why does the beep only ever sound from 02:37 AM to 03:07 AM and never at any other time ?

Are they designed this way just to ruin your life ?

Why do they need a battery anyway when they are mains powered ?, and how does the battery runout if they are mains powered ?

And....why is my quadruple expresso taking so long to make

Oh I hate it when they do that, sets off my OCD badly and even after they are sorted, I still can't sleep for fear of fire breaking out for weeks after.

Went for a 6th form college visit yesterday, youngest absolutely loved it there and they have said they follow the statements as closely as they can, which is a lot better than his current school who have said they can't promise anything. Only problem is that it is a 20 minute drive away and he would need transport....and that causes no end of other issues for him!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
