I don't mind a bit of jazz - Gilles Peterson plays a fair amount on his radio programme. Not sure what type :) but its definitely not Norah Jones or Michael Buble.

In my last lab job, people were keen on having Magic FM (I think) on in the lab. About every half an hour or so they would play a Michael Buble song, so he is a bit of an in-joke now with an ex-colleague.

Hmm - I think jazz is a bit of an emperor's new clothes thing, only those clever/musical enough are able to appreciate it :rotfl:

Gen you are several steps ahead of me if you are both able to see an escape route and have persuaded the DW to do her share. I find the only answer is is get so bogged down in the minutae that the fact that there are as many years left to retirement as have been worked already is pushed out of one's thoughts. Blinkers on and keep plodding....
    I think....

I've contemporaries in the police force who've now retired, and have taken up second careers for basically beer money.

Last year I got a letter saying my retirement (pension) age has gone up by a year. Pretty sure that's not the last of those I'll get.

I'm worried that reaching my retirement is going to be like trying take a close-up photo of the horizon.:(

I think everyone appreciates really good jazz.

The rest of it depends largely on taste, or large amounts of "herbal" cigarettes of course :D

I balance the work that brings in the money with the voluntary stuff I do.

I feel very lucky that I am in a position to have the time to do both, but it does make for a good life balance.

OH gets moody times from his work, but he loves to travel and his work gives him that opportunity, so again the good is balancing the bad.

I'm sure viva said she also has one job that she only does to provide a reliable income.

Why do you like your garage so much? That's interesting to me. We're thinking of keeping the garaging bit of our garage flexible, open or gate fronted rather than doors.

DS wants to clear all the stuff out of ours - not so that the car can go in it but so that he can convert it into a studio for his green screen filming.

After complaints I now tumble dry socks on the low setting only. On the standard setting the elastic tightens or the material shrinks, to the extent they have a fight to get them on their feet.

Socks shrink for us too. I don't usually do them in the TD but I do put them on radiators, which I think is probably the cause of the problem.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Gen, glad things are a bit better. How are you?

Yes, that's promising news. Hope nothing happens to set her back.
We have had a couple of washer driers which have both been condensing driers. They were godawful and if you wanted to dry anything to the point you could wear it you had to do each item individually and for about 4 times longer than a vented one. Plus I used to accidentally tip half a litre of water on the floor when I emptied it. I think they must be much more expensive to run compared to a vented one. The only reason to get one is if you physically cannot have a vented one.

I've had washer tumblers that were condensing ones too, but they didn't need emptying. The condensate went straight to the drain along with the waste water from washing. I have a vented separate TD now, and it's much better.

Currently, most things just get draped on radiators around the house. Once the heating is off I'll just use an airer (probably in the lean to/ conservatory/ orangery).

IME, when it's sunny an airer in a conservatory is very quick and effective. :)
