It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I remember growing up, & a family friend had a commodore 64, then an amiga the day they came out, then various sega's/playstations the days those came out.

We had a commodore vic 20, an atari, & eventually a mega drive. Although we were a little envious at the time (my brother more than me, I was less fussed) looking back, we weren't deprived.

I had a ZX81! 1kB of memory, expandable to 16kB (which I did). I later upgraded to a Spectrum and then an Atari of some sort. I used to write computer games for them on rainy days.

About 10 years ago, whilst dealing with debt work as an adviser somewhere, there was this serial client who would regularly bring in new debts that he'd "just found out about". He was on incapacity (I was convinced he was also working, but couldn't prove it). He had repeat warnings that taking on additional debts would result in his case being closed, but he'd continue. One january, he brought in another new debt. It turned out to be a loan to buy his 12yo a quad bike.

This was the final straw for me, & I advised him that it wasn't justified. His response - "my child is not going to be deprived because I'm on incapacity!".

I pointed out hundreds of kids didn't have quad bikes & are not classed as deprived. Accordingly, I shut his file & wrote to all creditors.

I honestly wouldn't have the patience for that job. I'm too grumpy.

Isaac muttered about lots of his mates having an ipad, and he'd quite like one too, for Christmas. He's not spinning a line, most of his classmates do indeed have their very own ipads.

We choked down our initial, "not bleedin' likely, sunshine!" response and went instead for the measured chat - did he know how much they cost? What would he actually want to do on it? What could he do on it that he couldn't do on the normal desktop he has? After answering all those questions, he decided it was a waste of money and he'd rather have a dressing gown with dinosaurs on it and the Walking With Beasts DVD instead. So he got them.

Youngest has got an Ipad but only because he saved for well over a year (probably closer to 18 months), asked for money for birthday and Christmas and sold bits and pieces so he could buy it himself.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

It's all multi million dollar houses and quarter of a million dollar SUVs at the Generalissimos' school. We're very much the poor cousins.

So are we, and I consider us well off compared to most!

Following on from yesterday, I'm slowly recovering. PM me for more details, as I don't want detailed health info on the searchable forums.

My kids used the family computer for a long time. I think DS1 got a laptop for his 18th birthday - so only 5.5 years ago. DS2 got his laptop when he was 16 - 3 years ago. DS1's was replaced when it was hit by a brick! So they both now have 3 year old laptops. Neither of them have tablets. They both have iphone 4's which are out of contract. I've never thought of them as deprived until now.

James got his own laptop with his 18th birthday money, he asked everybody to give him money instead of a pressie and managed to get enough to buy a decent but low end priced laptop.

Youngest and middle share the family laptop, I have my own (which is 3 years old)

Neither have an Iphone, youngest doesn't like phones and middle has got a low end priced phone.

The two younger boys have a joint XBox 360, ex hubby got it second hand for £40. James saved up and bought his own when he was 16, which he has taken to uni with him.

Youngest also has an Ipod touch, again, something he saved up for himself, selling his PSP which he had received as a present between me, ex hubby and my parents second hand, to help with the purchase.

With reference to the barristers strike and criminal barristers, (and solitors) and the sort staff for them come to think of it, having helped fill in a few 'form b's with clients in the past I can confirm I too am FAR TOO GRUMPY. And determinedly far too removed from the left.

I'm not grumpy, I look on it as a challenge, finding people a path out of the !!!!.

I can however understand lj saying enough is enough - some people just don't want to be helped.

    Ah, discovered problem.

They have to plough through three people's land and hadn't asked them first. Road , fair enough, but you'd think they'd clear it with people whose land or gardens they expect to go through.

Now I'm going to go round and explain we didn't realise and show the map we were given which showed only public highway disruption and our garden being blasted and that of course we didn't expect our neighbours ( one of whom we don't know) to just have their garden ploughed through, and if we had realised we would at least have had the grace to make an approach first!!!!

    Blimey.
