Not mean, but perhaps making a few assumptions that may not be accurate. Maybe the person doesn't have a car. The delivery charge is cheaper than a cab, and also probably cheaper than several bus fares if she couldn't carry all that home in one go, or something. The dog's hardly expensive if she's only spending £1.49 on dog food, and she may be using the internet at work rather than paying for a connection at home. I always find it surprising how much more posting there is on here once people go back to work after any kind of holiday. I do my MSE posting from home, and post a lot more in the holidays than the term time.

Its absolutely true, IMO that an Internet shop is the easiest way not to deviate from list and to remain on plan and to budget, You cannot make use of whoopsies, but fruit /veg is the main whoosie I am interested in anyway. Thus an Internet shop is often the cheapest shop.

I tend to adhere reasonably rigidly to plan but do find my self wandering tempted sometimes. My cupboards hold the evidence.

I think food has different priority for people. I see it as medicine and sensual and creative.

If I saw it as something I had to do to live......I suppose I'd eat pot noodles on the fly.

Fwiw, we eat differently when I am budgeting harder.

When I look at that with my mathematical eye I just don't get enough calories for three people to survive for a month without substantial weight loss. Unless two of the people are very small. So, I think the thread is a "plan" thread and the plan probably came unstuck before the first week was up.

I was familiar with her as a poster. (I think a lot of quantities/amounts were posted for effect, in all honesty). I was trying to say more about how people have different ideas on what constitutes good food, but appreciate that I personally can't escape having an opinion on how to spend money.

They were comfortable enough to hold themselves as an example to others with recipes detailing how to eat well on a budget. To me, the recipes are so bad that even trying to use those meal plans, I would have to find other ways to make food edible. Ideally spending more money on it, or if necessity really meant a budget that extreme, changing to different ingredients. If I had to eat like that, I'd be desperate to find a different solution, I wouldn't be satisfied that it was one, iyswim.

I bet some of you are probably boring people who flip pancakes instead of tossing them, which takes all the fun out of having them. ;)
I've never tossed... why risk a pancake disaster. I use a spatula.

That's her "big shop", then she says she revisits to pick up more fresh stuff.

The trouble with people like that is they forget the other stuff they pick up here and there..... no doubt she believes she spends £45, but might be forgetting something.

I used to know somebody who said the two of them spent £20/week on food. When questioned it turned out different - when I pointed out the difference she still couldn't see it. She said: "We go to Farmfoods once a week and get it all for £20". Then she said "We go to M&S to get ...... and we have two takeaways a week" And then I asked about lunch "Oh, OH eats at his work canteen and I use mine most days".

Ok, that's help ful.....so, don't discount them you are saying? If I got the right cooker with an induction job instead of a gas hob don't rule it out, yes?

    And its not safe? :D

I'd need a match to flamb! like I do on my electric hob now. That's ok. I can live with that. Saves knocking through cheese room wall.

I thought induction was better than gas purely on performance and convenience but the cost seems prohibitive (from memory anyway, not sure whether the price has come down now?). If they were the same price I would get induction over gas, but they aren't and I have a limited supply of money and I would rather spend it on other things, like holidays. Or lager.

You also need to factor in whether you will need to buy some induction-friendly stuff as a result - as I'm sure you already know induction only works with ferrous metals.

I hadn't even thought about pans!

Tbh, the right cooker worth a price. I will only buy the one again if I stay here. First one I bought not happy with!

I really need to hire something with an induction hob to have a go for a week. :)
