Some things I make in a microwave in the Pyrex jug - and eat it out of that jug too
DH and I sometimes eat out of one bowl, or oven dish wrapped in a towel.
The latter is because its warm!0 -
I do prefer hob cooking, frying is good and boiling. All those recipes that promise "one pot..." then start by telling you to fry onions etc first.....
I do keep half an eye open for a set of 3 saucepans for £10... not spotted them yet. Last set came from Morrisons I think. Gave those to my parents in my big declutter of 2007, then they went to the charity shop with everything else in the final house clearance.
Heating an oven for one dish seems so wasteful.
That's why the microwave's full of win for me. In/out, job done, food on plate......
Oh - and new superexcitement for me..... was reading a thread yesterday about cheapest lavatory tissue .... and they all said Home Bargains. Well, I've not got one anywhere near me, but I went to double-check on the website and it appears there's one that's just opened near to me!!!!
For anybody who has ever said "No HB near me" - check again, they've opened, and are opening, loads of new stores0 -

Heating the oven IS. A cost, and one of the reasons I say I don't think I could eat the quality we do for less, but I certainly think we could eat more cheaply some things ready made meals. People often forget the cost of cooking.
For me, the cost is ok, accounted for and the bonus is warmth. It does make sense though to think ahead and see what else can be cooked at the same time, like I'll be doing with the pork tomorrow.0 -

I will usually cook all 8 sausages in a pack in one go in the oven.... but that's then 4 meals' worth.
It's not just the cost, some ovens are slow to heat up - and opening that door to put in one tiny pie, or one tiny dish, is quite a forlorn experience.... rather than putting in some huge thing that really gets you excited that you'll be eating it soon0 -
I've started taking the decorations down between posting. DH is forlorn.
Not the tree, just the sitting room stuff. I'll probably take the window dressing out of the dining room window too.0 -

You're mean you know..... should have left them up until he goes back to work
You've sucked the joy from the break/Xmas.

Yes, I've said before, I'd find it hard with out a freezer. But otherwise cooking for one can be ok, no one else's tastes to cater for at least.
But if YOU find it forlorn then your way is best for you. For me it wouldn't be...so long as I had a freezer!0 -

I didn't want to do it alone, and we didn't want to do it on Sunday because we decided it would make Sunday sad. We'll do the tree tomorrow or Saturday. This is just the extra bits. Glittery reindeer on mirrors, baubles in windows. A glass Christmas tree on a shelf.
Those ruddy bells on every door in the house......0 -
I've never seen the point of slow cookers. Think they are a bit of a gimmick.
So, has anyone started their new years diet yet?
Today's meal: Highland Venison stew. I'm looking forward to it, I've never had Venison before and have always wanted to try it.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

The thing with induction jobs is that sales men keep saying to me...touch them, touch them they are totally safe, and I keep saying......but I don't care......are they good? And they just keep saying how safe they are and I just keep saying I don't care, I like to walk on the wild side.......it gets quite nasty that they get cross i don't automatically love the idea and DH gets the giggles.
I'm not fussed about the whole safety thing - I know how to behave safely around cookers and so do my kids. Induction hobs are supposed to be even more controllable than gas, and as cleanable as ceramic, as chewy says. They're also more efficient than other forms of electric cooking.PasturesNew wrote: »I don't know what those hobs are .... but I do know I've never shaken a pancake. If I want to jiggle food about on electric hobs I raise the pan. I get super annoyed at the TV chefs who noisily jiggle their pans on their hobs.
I roll for coverage, as lir says, but then I shake it while it's cooking (probably not necessary now pans are non-stick, but used to be crucial when I was a kid) and you absolutely have to shake the thing before you toss it. But then I bet some of you are probably boring people who flip pancakes instead of tossing them, which takes all the fun out of having them.Doozergirl wrote: »Is it okay to post this if the person in question hasn't been on the site in over five years? I used to spend a bit of time in old style back around this time but it was this menu planning that frightened me:

It links on to menu plans and recipes.
I do know that there are people living in terrible poverty but I'd have to give up the internet connection, the dog, the Tesco delivery charge and meat in favour of some flavour..
I'll delete this if I'm being mean.
Not mean, but perhaps making a few assumptions that may not be accurate. Maybe the person doesn't have a car. The delivery charge is cheaper than a cab, and also probably cheaper than several bus fares if she couldn't carry all that home in one go, or something. The dog's hardly expensive if she's only spending £1.49 on dog food, and she may be using the internet at work rather than paying for a connection at home. I always find it surprising how much more posting there is on here once people go back to work after any kind of holiday. I do my MSE posting from home, and post a lot more in the holidays than the term time.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0
