It probably is disproportionate in relation to modern day tariffs, however, he was sentenced for crimes committed at a different time and his sentence was consistent with the treatment someone could expect for the crimes he committed at the time.

Yes, but at what point do you normalize and say that's not how we do things anymore? A more extreme example would be if a murderer escaped from prison in the 1950s we wouldn't capture them and hang them now, because we've moved on.

I'm not trying to stick up for Biggs by the way. Yes my dad said he was a nice enough bloke, but he didn't know Biggs, he knew a veneer, a persona developed by an accomplished liar.

It's a difficult moral judgement, but one that in my view has to be reserved to parliament and not judges. Parliament should be the final moral authority on these type of issues.

In practice, parliament has and will continue to retroactively reduce sentences for whole classes of behavior, and even to abolish offenses and extinguish them from the record. Hence the commutation of death sentences - because the UK people have decided these sentences are unfair.

Parliament has also given the crown authority to pardon and commute sentences where, in the opinion of the crown, a sentence is unfair or too harsh, or where circumstances have changed.

I don't think Ronnie was unfairly treated. Harshly treated, yes, but not unfairly. In actual fact, his sentence was commuted by the state on compassionate grounds.

DD graduated for her MA today, so we watched , felt very mumsy and proud, had a celebratory lunch at a place of her choosing -in our local pub. Had friends over this evening, drank wine and DD was with us and chatted about her interests - culture, communications, and crossing borders - the irony of her not wanting to leave the village was to quote PN, whoosh.

We have offered her a long haul trip as a pressie. She will have fun choosing where/when.

Congratulations, bask in the reflected glory.

Nice present, my kids would like you to adopt them.

My house is at the bend in our road. In one direction, most houses have some outdoor lights or lights in the windows - no figures or writing, but strings of lights, icicles, that sort of thing. In the other direction, nothing. My kids refer to that direction as the boring half of the road.

Oh well, we live in humbug street. Some of the jewish families that do do the Xmas tree and lights seem to have toned it down over the last couple of years and the christian families haven't put on a big show.

When it was snow or very heavy rain the chickens didn't want to come out at all. They just poked their head out, looked mournful, and clucked at the grey sky with contempt.

Sounds to me as if the chickens are a lot smarter than we are....

We do too. You would be hard pressed to know that it is Christmas around here. Apparently it is now considered gauche to display Christmas ornamentation on the outside of one's residence, which is a real shame.

However I can drive to mother in law's, at which point I pass a whole parade of houses, any one of which could be occupied by the Griswolds.

I'd better tell our street where it is still considered ok to go with lights of either white or blue, specifically icicles and strings on front yard trees - although we are not so uncouth as to go for colours, flashing displays, neon figures or inflatables.

As a kid I admit I preferred American or culturally American Christmases.

Ott outside of houses whether tasteful or......not, but done with gusto.

Now I think of electricity usage and the effort of putting it all out and away. But its still fun.

I would like to have more Christmas trees, maybe five or six, and all white lights that io could leave up and use as summer evening lighting too.

I put different little things out each season, wreaths for spring, summer, autumn, Halloween, thanksgiving....etc etc.....no real impact to anyone but us, but that's all that counts. :).

Yep, absolutely true. The UK spent a disproportionate amount of money chasing and imprisoning him relative to his crime. It also elevated him to a level that was really unwarranted.

I doubt that Jack Mill's family agree with that.

The Train Robbers were wrongly romanticized IMO. They were thieving, violent thugs who in earlier times would have been hanged with no regrets.

He was sentenced for 28 years and his release in 2010 was a joke. He should have been left to rot in the hospital wing.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

I didn't doubt it! I love trying to work out what the message was before auto-correct mangled it.

Does your ipad support Siri by the way? Then you could just dictate your messages, which would give a whole new opportunity for the ipad to be creative.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
