    @zerog: Thanks for sharing your view. How do you go about the conversion to airline tickets? Do you transfer the Amex reward points to some airline's miles, or do you book flights directly through Amex?

    Yes, convert MR to Avios or Virgin Atlantic Miles etc and then use these to book a flight or better, upgrade a flight. They do occasional bonus conversion rates which can be worth using but remember that MR points never expire but some airmile schemes do.

    Once they become miles they act like miles earned any other way so read up on HeadforPoints or FlyerTalk etc how to maximise their value.

    Thanks, I noticed this, but also that you get a little over GBP 10 in affiliate marketing cashback if you order the card through topcashback, which has the advantage of being cash.

    <snip>

    Given this 0.5%, I still find the Platinum cashback card far superior that gives you 1.25% from the first quid and just costs GBP 25 a year. But I guess the main selling point of the Gold card is the higher status it is supposed to convey.

    It depends what you value MR points at. If you value them at 0.5p then 2,000 MR points is £10. Most suggest using a value of 1p and so the extra bonus is worth £20. I personally play the airmiles game and so would value them higher than that.

    Some will always argue cash is king and thats understandable

    The main advantage of the Gold card is not status, "platinum" is considered above "gold". The advantage is double points in supermarkets and petrol stations
