TV Licensing - do i need a lisence?

OK.

I dont have a TV, watch live TV under their definition, on my phone etc just the catch up services.

However, as of this week Im now letting somebody else use my broadband (live in bedsits), this person has a license for their bedsit and they will be watching live TV.

Do I need a license if hes watching BBC, BT sports etc on his computer, on my line?

Im at a loss.

Only the household or apartment doing the watching needs the licence.

No different from the situation where your neighbour gets his live TV signal from the aerial on your house. He's the one who needs the licence.
  • Thanks.

Whats your source for this? Is it common knowledge?

I always believed that if I had a license and was watching telly at somebody else's house and the TV Detector man came to the door ..... because I was there watching it he'd be out of luck ......

Nope. The address is what is licensed, not the person. My TV licence shows Donald Duck as the name - so we always know when the reminders arrive.....

Not related to the TV licence but be careful because you as the account holder will be liable for any illegal activity / or dodgy images the person using your broadband downloads.
  • Yep, you'll need a licence. Friend of mine moved in temporarily after he left his wife. As I didn't have a TV I told him he'd have to get a licence as he wanted a TV in his room. Silly thing got it in my name, and then left before it expired. I obviously didn't renew, and it must have wound up the authorities a bit... :-)
  • Hi all , I was recently found to have no license for 1 month and was fined £530.. Long Story..

I have since wrote to them demanding they stop sending me their service, If they fail to comply I will use their service as a free gift.
You need to remember that they are nothing more than a service provider and as such a bound to follow strict guidelines, one of those guidelines is not to enforce their service upon you and must remove the service if you inform them so.
Little trick I have learned, If a stranger comes to your door and asks you to verify your name ALLAYS say no, It gives you a great feeling of power and without proving who you are they have no choice but to go away..
Happy hunting and good luck to all

Who is the 'they' you have written to?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yet another one post wonder that won't return, nor will they post anything else.
    Not on that account anyway...
