Week 1 Month 1 tax code

Due to the job centre being utterly incompetent morons, I've received a P45 with this tax code (god knows why as they have all of my details and issued the correct P45 before I went on holiday).

This obviously disregards all tax and earnings to date so taxes me 20% on earnings but my question is, is it taxed on the entire gross pay or is the monthly personal allowance still applied?

Depends on what the code bit is - the figure before the M1/W1 indicators.

944L is the standard code which means you are entitled to 9440 tax free per annum

however with a M1/W1 code you get 9440/12 per month tax free then the rest at 20%

    Thanks.

It says 'tax code at leaving date - 944L' but also the M1/W1 box is ticked. Where will this leave me on my first pay day?

Also, they claim not to have any tax info for me and, to date, I'm a good 2k under the cumulative allowance so should be due a refund. I've no idea why they 'haven't got tax info' as they did in August so unsure why not now!

assuming you are paid monthly say Y
then your tax will be 20% of (y-9440/12)

maybe give some more details of your employment / income since April 2013

If they issued a P45 before you went on holiday I assume that you must have signed off then, what did you do with that P45 and what happened between signing off and signing back on again?

I did indeed. I did exactly what I had to; I signed back on and provided them with the relevant parts of the P45, which they clearly lost. Morons.
