To mid may - employed, paid ~3600, tax ~285
Mid may - signed on. Paid ~£950 to mid August. £245 tax rebate.
Mid aug: signed off for two weeks holiday
End aug: signed on, gave them the relevant p45 which they'd issued to me previously. Paid £~850 to 1 dec
1 dec: signed off. Total pay ~£5200, tax ~£1450 -

Yes, you look to be in an overpaid situation and it won't correct itself whilst you are on a month 1 tyax code. The only people who can correct this are HMRC. Contact them with all this information, if you can go there yourself rather than phone or write.The only thing that is constant is change.0 -

Yeah. I will be writing to be job centre (to find out how any why they have !!!!ed up) and Hmrc.
At least it's a bit of a saving for the time being.

Called them but it was a waste of time, apparently they wait for my new employer to tell them about my earnings and tax code which I assume they don't even have. Ridiculous situation.0

So have you given your new employer your P45 yet? If you haven't or they haven't used it yet, then it probably is too early as HMRC haven't got your new employer's details as yet.
I assumed you had been paid once by your new employer.0
