advance warning - bus only street

Just a little more topic drift for you wiogs, if you have driven in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow you would have noticed how remarkably clearer the grid road system of Glasgow is in making life easier for planners to route traffic through the city centre. However, despite Edinburgh being distinctly un-car friendly and Aberdeen being a two street town, Glasgow really put its snout in the trough where such cameras have sprung up willy-nilly, creating more traffic pinch points and walking pace traffic (and of course huge income) than ever before. The councillors have also cannily managed to generate more than double of the income from such devices as Aberdeen and Edinburgh combined. They have clearly overstepped the mark and thousands of penalties from Glassford Street alone have had to be refunded.
They have nothing to do with lowering city centre emissions, speeding public transport or making the City safer. It is all to do with cash grab.
I agree that the management of traffic in Glasgow is pretty pathetic, however that does not excuse drivers from paying attention.0 -
The fact is the scheme in birmingham can only be paid for if enough people are fined.
If no one were fined then the council would face a 3.5 million pound financial black hole. It is in their interests for signage to be less clear than it could be0 -
We also dont want drivers paying more attention to looking for bus only signs than pedestrians and other vehicles0

Corporation street in birmingham. Turned left on to priory queensway
Are you new to the area. Driving anywhere in Birmingham City centre is like a no go area and is best avoided at the best of times but especially at this time of year. It's either a restricted road or be prepared to sit in standstill traffic.
Where exactly were you trying to go?
With the new station being built at new street and a new tram line being installed there is loads of disruption, has been for several years and will continue for several more until it's finished.
Ps if you'd travelled down them roads before the restrictions were in place it would become clear why those restrictions were desperately needed. An opinion is just that..... An opinion0 -
Hi I was driving in birmingham and approached an island that had three roads off it. The first and third exits were bus only and 2nd exit was no entry.
So the only option to avoid a fine was to come back the way I came from
My question is should there have been advance warning that the exits off the island were bus lanes?
Tried pepipoo but seems pretty dead over thereCorporation street in birmingham. Turned left on to priory queensway
I live in Birmingham and it has been sign posted for years and years, at one stage Corparation street was one way heading north, the section past the old Lewis store has been restricted to service vehicles only for years, nothing to do with the recent bus lane stories.0 -
ive been caught out twice over these in London. satnav led me into there and when driving in unfamiliar roads in London it can be easy to fall for these traps. Drivers behind give you not chance to think, even if you slow down a little bit you get BEEP BEEPP at your !!!!. Pedestrians just step onto the road without checking for cars, cyclists alwaays weaving through on any clearing even if it's just 2ft between kerb and vehicle. So your focus is spread thin and wide, you can overlook these signs sometimes, especially if you're driving behind a double decker bus which will obscure the signs a little.
Both times i had no clue i was on a bus only street. but the pictures they sent me clearly showed two signs either side display bus only signs and a picture of CCTV logo.
I should add both times i got caught because i was on very tight deadlines and was very rushed. Lesson learnt dont drive when you're stressed and don't rush.0 -

I drove in to central London recently and wow it was a real eye opener for the exact reasons you list here - eye balling your sat nav or like whilst moving is an absolute no no. I didn't even see any signs advising me I was about to enter the congestion zone. So could have easily made the same mistake as you here. Anybody that categorically states op should have seen the signs irrespective of the circumstances are probably the people that drive the same route every day and have been for years.0 -

I don't know which sat nav you have but my very old tomtom alerts for congestion zone as did my road angel, the other reason the OP should have noticed is that there were no cars going along that section
it is sign posted (colmore circus) and more so now than it was then, the areas that are highlighted on the news are recent, although the council did publicise from the summer that the bus lanes were going to be very active from July 19th 2013.0 -

This is corporation street. Need to go down there and take first left.
Down there is the island I turned left at. There are no advance warnings that island has no exits for cars0
