I had my cat PTS at home a couple of years ago and was charged £70 (thought it was kinder to the cat as she hated travelling in the car and I didn't want her to get agitated) sadly my dad had to have his cat PTS by the same vet a couple of months ago, this time we went to the surgery and he was charged £30.

You will pay a great deal more for the vet to come to your house. If money is an issue you might ask your vet for a sedative to give your cat beforehand so that you can take her to the surgery without her being stressed.
Sorry to have to say it, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do the deed .
Do you really want her to linger with no quality of life? No, of course you don't , you are a caring responsible owner and like all us responsible pet owners sometimes we have to do things that are heart breaking for us but what is right for our pet. We've been there and done it and cried buckets....

    Thinking of you..take care.

You rang around to save money!!

Read carefully SimonSays. Please pay particular attention to the order of events.

I had my cat put to sleep. I paid the £50 that they charged. I was so horrified that I then rang around to see if this was the going rate. It was then I found that this was not the case and it varied wildly. I was hacked off I had been taken advantage of at a vulnerable time (my 18 year cat had just been put to sleep).

Conclusion - if one vets can do it for £20 why can't others.

    Hi Pukkamum

It cost £165 for a vet and a nurse to come to my house and put down my dog.

He was aged 13, a little bit arthritisy in his back legs but his main problem was with his breathing. He was all right in himself and so stoic (so he didn't make it worse by panicking) but the breathing was getting so bad he could no longer go on walks and didn't cope at well with hot weather.

We, and the vet, thought it was probably laryngeal paralysis for which the only cure was an operation, I was not willing to put him through an operation at his age, so for the last months of his life he was kept cool, walked in the coolest parts of the day, shortened walks etc. The vets were keen to operate but I wanted only palliative care at this stage and there were also possible side effects from the operation that I felt weren't worth risking at his age.

However, once he was too breathless to go for any walks at all, we decided that this was not a good enough quality of life for him (I appreciate other people's thresholds may be different). He was extremely stressed by vet visits, which would have made his breathing worse so we decided that a home visit was the only option for him.

The vet and her assistant were both calm and quiet, he liked women anyway and he was able to lie on his bed with us around him while he died pretty much as he lived, quietly, with dignity and without fuss.

I wasn't bothered about having his ashes so they took his body away (I have his name tag as a keepsake) and I donated his things to a local dog charity.

Although I miss him terribly (I am a bit teary writing this), I feel absolutely at peace about the way he died.

However, the vet did warn me that there might be side effects such as him gasping for breath as he died, there were none for us but it might be worth considering depending on who will be there for your pet at the end.
  • It cost me £135 to have my Sasha PTS last November £70 for the vet to call to the house and £65 for the dreaded deed :(, she was almost 13 and had really bad arthritis, was blind and had dementia. Medication kept her going for a good 6 months, she had a good life and ruled the roost but the day came when she couldn't walk and not even tramadol was helping and then the vet told me the dreaded words that she had no quality of life:( I knew I had to let her go for her sake.

I wanted her to be at home till the last as she hated the vets :( She had a sedative before and she was content and snoring very loudly in my arms when she passed it was so peaceful for her which was the main thing.

I also paid £158 to have her cremated privately and her ashes returned to us I don't begrudge a penny to have her home with us next to her picture. and I talk to her everyday
