Hi all
Absolutely devastated tonight. When the head vet examined her today, he said that she had deteriorated overnight (which I could see for myself - she could barely walk from the car to the surgery), and that he could feel the mass inside and, in his words, it was massive.
He said that it was highly unlikely that they would be able to successfully remove the whole mass, and that it would be more than likely that it would return. His best case scenario was that we could get six months with her, and we would likely be back in the same position.
She was clearly failing, so I took the hardest decision ever, and told them to let her go. She was so anaemic that they couldn't find a vein, and had to inject straight into her heart. I sat with her stroking her and talking to her, and although she was very sedated, it was still the most horrible thing I have ever done.
We are all deeply upset - I think because it all happened so quickly, and there was no warning that she was poorly. She was still flapping around like a mad thing at the weekend, and we all got a marvelous welcome on Monday. And then within the space of 24 hours, we were faced with this.
And I was in such shock, I didn't even ask how much it was going to cost. They told me not to bother about anything today, but to give them a call early next week, and they would sort it out for me.
Thank you all for sharing your experiences with me. I have never had to deal with this before, and I don't think I could bear to go through it again.0 -
How awful for you, but it sounds like you did the best for your pet and thats all anyone can do. Try to think about all the happy times you had with her and not about having her PTS and passing away.0

I am so sorry! this has come as such a shock to you, you have had no time to prepare yourselves.
Be kind to yourselves now - you have spared your dog surgery which would not have affected the outcome and she was clearly failing fast. she may not even have lasted another day.
oh dear, I hope that has come across the way I meant it to?
after dilly dallying about this decision with my last cat and dog - I now firmly believe in 'Better a week too early than a day too late'.0 -

I felt that when you are upset it isn't something you would do to get the best price and I felt taken advantage of.0 -
I'm so sorry to hear that you lost her, it's so hard when such things happen out of the blue like that. You made the right decision though, and you spared her and yourselves a lot of grief and pain.0
