I think most people would feel the same as Awkward_Man, if they're being honest. Who could honestly say that if a parent died and the surviving parent re-married they wouldn't have the same worries? That the family home (yes, ok it's not the 'family' home, but that's how most of us see it) could possibly be sold and divided equally between you, your siblings and maybe 4 relatively unknown step-siblings? I wouldn't be, that's for sure

Really? My parent's home was their home. I stopped thinking of it as mine when I grew up and left home. It's called being independent.

I think it's understandable, it doesn't make anyone money grabbing, it would be a bitter pill if someone else shared an inheritance they had come so late to, would be interested in what the other partners children are saying about their mothers situation as she also has a home.
I don't have such concerns myself as my remaining parent has already spent all the money on who they would like to see have it and that doesn't appear to be me:rotfl: They don't have the satisfaction of thinking I give a hoot though.
Would want my children to inherit everything I have though fairly split between them and would really hate to think in the future that could change at all. If I were to have a late in life surge of love, no matter how wonderful the other person is I hope my kids would fight tooth and nail for their inheritance should I be naive enough to risk anything.

A little harsh, and not the point I was making. I'm completely independent, having left home over 30yrs ago, and have stood on my own two feet since then. It's still the family home - nothing to do with money, or inheritance. We all migrate back there come all the high days and holidays, family crises or pies for Saturday lunch. It's where the heart is and my parents wouldn't have it any other way.

I don't care one jot if I never get a penny from the house, infact I wish there was some way they could release all the equity and have a damn good time on it while they still can, without jeopardising future needs. But IF I am going to inherit, I was merely making the point that I wouldn't wish to share it with some strangers who I may have met once at a wedding.

Presumably your parents would have spent rather more time with their stepchildren though. Which is what counts.
