Problems using new smartphone to view maps

On Android phones turning on Wi-Fi usually turns off mobile data.
Turning Wi-Fi on does not disable mobile data.
If Wi-Fi is on then the handset will try to connect to Wi-Fi, if it can't then it will automatically connect to 3G (assuming the handset is correctly configured for 3G of course).Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it0 -
As others have mentioned you need to look for an item in settings called 'mobile data' and make sure that is on. Also the fact that you sent a text and made a call does not guarantee the signal is good enough for data. I get this on vodafone ALL the time as there is only limited 3G in Wales from vodafone. You will be able to make calls\send texts with poor 3G or 2G but apps that use data will probably 'time out' thus giving you the 'no network' message.0

Turning on Wi-Fi does disable mobile data on my stock Nexus 4. Other manufacturers modifications to stock Android may or may not also do this.Quiet_Spark wrote: »Turning Wi-Fi on does not disable mobile data.

You might also need to set up the APN on the phone before you can use 3G data.0

Only because you happen to be in range of one of your saved wifi points.
Do it in bum!!!! nowhere and mobile data will work even with wifi on.0 -
Some smartphones are not very "smart" in the way that they handle 3G and Wifi. Sometimes if you are in range of a Wifi hotspot (such as a BT one) your phone will automatically try to connect to it in preference to using 3G but won't get connected to the internet as you haven't logged on. The result is that apps such as Maps. Facebook etc don't see an open data connection so sit there doing nothing.
To workaround this you can turn off wifi when you are out and about. This also saves battery power.0 -
OK I turned off wifi and found settings/mobile networks/Data enabled and "clicked" Yes for mobile network. (Big tick now in box). However my sister texted me a photo just now via MMS (she sends them very low res) and I got message "Message not downloaded".
So I clicked on it and got Download Message option which I selected and got another message, at bottom of screen, saying Message could not be downloaded, try again later? (This was automatic download on my old not smart PAYG phone.)
What am I missing? And !!!!!! is APN?0 -
