You can't claim any mileage expenses (or any other type of expense) from HMRC.

HMRC can only deal with an adjustment to the tax you've paid on your income.

What's happening is that you should only pay tax on your income AFTER deducting costs which you have to incur as part of your job.

HMRC accepts that the cost of running a car is 45p a mile. You can offset the cost of business mileage cost against your income, and so pay tax on a lower amount of income. But you have to deduct what your employer has paid from the 45p, because you haven't really incurred a cost of 45p if your employer has given you, say, 20p a mile. Your cost is only 25p a mile in that example.

So the refund you receive from HMRC is 20% of 972.24 (assuming your calculations are right and you are a basic rate taxpayer).

If you think your employer isn't covering your transport costs sufficiently, that's a discussion for you to have with your employer, it's nothing to do with HMRC, and HMRC won't get involved.

If you aren't a taxpayer, there will be no refund from HMRC. They can't refund tax that was never paid.

Thanks thenudeone for your response. Yes I am a basic taxpayer and I have spoken to my manager and she says that they can only pay 23p per mile.

So maybe the best thing to do is call HMRC and explain my situation and ask them if I am able to claim/refund the 972 ish......and I believe my calculations are correct as I have been through them twice to check.

I will update as soon as I have found out further info on this.

Thanks to everyone with all their help...has been most useful and have learned a fair bit.

Oncall,I dont think you are reading things properly, you dont get £972 at the most you get 20% of that if you have paid tax and from what you have said you got your tax repaid - with an income of less than £9,000 last year you would not have paid tax.

Sorry, yes comeandgo.....I just re-read all the posts and understand now.....apologies...been a long day.......that's why took a little longer to sink in.

I think maybe I should just wait till next year and start a fresh one.....not worth all the hassle over a few pounds I guess...and I was grateful for the refund I received....unexpected...but a pleasant surprise. My tax code for this year is 944L......So will be keeping an eye for future figures etc etc....

    thanks for that!

Yes, you are due nothing for the year to 5 April 2013.

But you should be due a refund of some of the tax you will have paid in the year from 6 April 2013 to 5 April 2014.

The figure you quoted abve for April 2013 looks wrong, can you see why?
The only thing that is constant is change.

Sorry zygurat789 I can't see why the figure is wrong.....please could you explain.....ahhhh is it because it is over the cut off date (April)?

The figure for April looks like it's for a whole month and it should only be for 5 days. From 6 April is 2013/14.
This is good news for you because you will get no refund for 2012/13.

OP, you say you are the only care worker with a car in the area. Its not going to make a lot of difference but if you provide transport to other care workers who do not have a car you can claim tax relief for the passenger miles too. (From memory its 5p/mile for the first and 2p/mile for others).
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Can you expand on that please?

All I can find on HMRC website is:-

5p per passenger per business mile for carrying fellow employees in a car or van on journeys which are also work journeys for them. Only payments specifically for carrying passengers count and there is no relief if you receive less than 5p or nothing at all.
