Claimaing Mileage Allowance if possible
Comments

Hope I've got this right. I have gone through all my pay slips and expenses paid from October 2012 up to April 2013.
Total payment in expenses for miles for these months is 1098.48.
1098.48 divided by 23p is 4776 miles
4776 miles x 45p = 2149.20
2149.20 - 1098.48 = 1050.72
My claimable amount would be £1050.72 if I have calculated this correctly, and if so how would I receive this sum from HMRC please?
Hope I done that correct and would appreciate if anyone could have a once over check for me please.......
thanks to all in advance0 -

I am sure that you haven't but, just in case, don't include April 2013.
Here is the form to complete.

You do NOT receive this amount from HMRC you claim it as an allowable expense against your income. In other words you have paid tax on £1050.72 too much so you are entitled to £1050.72 X 20% back.
Are you sure there were no miles at 40p in that period, it would be better if you had your miles you had claimed each month.
The relevant dates are up to 5 April 2013 and from 6 April 2013 to 5 April 2014 HMRC years! The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Thanks guys....
On my p60 is states.....5805.93 (next to in this employment) and 461.60 (tax deducted) my tax code was 810LM1.....I was over taxed and received a refund automatically from HMRC for the 461.60.
I was on benefits prior to this...income support and DLA.....
Not sure if I would still be able to claim as I had a refund....but that was on the tax I being taxed on.0 -
the other thing you need to look at is the tax you paid in that tax year. If you started in October, were you working before then. What was you total taxable pay for 2012/13 and how much tax did you pay.
What you claim from HMRC is a refund of overpaid tax so to claim £200 of overpaid tax back you need to have paid £200 to start with.
There have been people that only worked for part of a year that paid no tax so there is nothing they can claim back.
typed too slow - so you got a refund of all the tax paid that year so there is nothing else they can refund you0 -
Thanks Caz3121.....I was not working before October 2012....I was on benefits.....plus looking after elderly parents....they were not well....and neither was I before October. Then I got better and so did my parents....and I decided to go back to work.
My P60 states that I earned 5805.93 from October 2012 to April 2013....and from October 12 - April 13 I was being taxed each month....that is why HMRC refunded me the 461.60 they overtaxed me....and my tax code was 810LM1.....this gets easier and easier hey.....so many figures and things to work out....0 -

Hi zygurat789....I will add up the miles I claimed and the only way I can do that is by going through my timesheets and adding all the miles I did.
What I did was go through my payslips and under expenses wrote down how much I was paid in each month.
October 2012 13.80
November 2012 190.00
December 2012 145.36
January 2013 184.00
February 2013 132.94
March 2013 174.90
April 2013 257.48
I added all the sums above and made a total of 1098.48 then divided by 23p.....thats how I figured I must have done 4776 miles.....I must of traveled the whole of the UK in miles this past month...lol....sure seems like it......and coming home is like a luxury nowadays........
I will go through my miles on my timesheets from Oct 12 to April 13....and add them up.....I was not getting 40p a mile back then as the client only joined us a few months ago...so was getting paid 23p per mile.0 -

I saw what you did and it would not have worked if you had had any 40p miles, I did not know you hadn't done any. It won't work next year, you'll have to add them up.
That, of course, is 5 April 2013.
It is a good idea to check your miles again. My wife just failed to qualify for her essential user allowance by a few miles. I checked her figures for the whole year and found that she had to submit her expenses by 25 of the month to beat the monthly cut-off and I found that she had never claimed for any expenses from 25th to the end of the month. So WE reclaimed her expenses, nice cheque from employer and she retained her essential user allowance.
Adding up is good for you.The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
so as your tax paid till April 2013 was essentially zero, there is nothing the tax man can pay you back. Just need to start looking at the numbers from April 2013 onwards0

The above figures are taken from my actual timesheet records and miles I have actually done.
I have gone through all the miles I have done since October 2012 up to April 2013......and I calculated approx 4601.60 miles....in total I have been paid for expenses by my employer for these miles is 1098.48.
If I times 4601.60 by 45p it makes it 2070.72 then minus 1098.48 from this and your left with 972.24 owed.......have I calculated this correctly?
Am I allowed to make a claim on this or is this getting over complicated.....I feel my brain slowly starting to fry with all these figures..............0
