Claimaing Mileage Allowance if possible

I work as a Care Worker (Private) and my employer pays me 23p per mile mileage allowance.

I have read the HMRC website information and it states that we are entitled to claim 45p per mile. I have spoken to my manager as she says that is all they can pay....23p per mile....and 40p per mile if I go from one job straight on to the next.

I was wandering if I could claim the difference of 22p through HMRC? I drive approximately 50-60 miles a day as at present I am the only main Care Worker with a car....and I have to cover the local villages.....

I am not complaining but having to keep up with the wear and tear of my car sometimes is a lot...especially as my brother put two new tyres on my car £50 each last week.....the ones before only lasted 4 months...too many potholes.....or my driving is really bad.

I have added all the miles I did last month as I have to fill in time sheets and calculated that I did 2,065 miles. I had to cover a few workers off and sick and on holiday.....so hopefully won't be doing that much work again for a while....as it was a lot.

Appreciate any help on if I could claim this please. Thanks in advance

I believe, from reading other things on here that you do claim the difference form HMRC but ring them to check,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You only get tax back on the difference ie20%of the difference between what you get from your employer and 45p for the first 10,000miles then I think HMRC drop their rate from 45p to 25p, and then as you sometimes get 40p a mile you then are owe HMRC more tax as your 40p is more than the 25p they say you can get.
You must keep clear record of the miles claimed and how much you got from your employer then put in a claim to HMRC after 6th April.

That bit is correct and the records are, of course, the same records you submit to your employer so all you need to know is Total miles and amount received from employer

Thanks zygurat789 and comeandgo for your reply.

My mistake....just got off the phone with my manager and she said that I only get 40p per mile for one of my clients as she lives 10 miles from where I live....and she pays our company extra money for mileage as there is no other care agency near where she lives.

I was thinking that if I got 40p per mile from one job to the other then it would add up quite a fair bit.....because in the mornings I start approx 7a.m.....and do 4 sometimes 5 shifts one after the other....3 later in the day....then from 7p.m onwards I do another 4 shifts one after the other.

Need a holiday asap...lol....have one booked on the 10 December for a week. I will calculate my miles as I have copies of all my timesheets showing times...dates.....miles.....etc etc......

Not sure how far I can go back and claim? would be grateful for any tips on where to start please.

    Thanks once again.

puting aside the 40p per mile route and assuming you do 2,000 miles each and every month
    total miles = 24,000
    HMRC allow first 10,000 miles @ 45p = £4,500
    after that it is 25p per mile so 14,000 @ 25p = £3,500
total at HMRC rates = £8,000

    total paid by employer = 24,000 @ 23p = £5,520

    difference = £8,000 - £5,520 = £2,480
    tax relief @ 20% would be £496

you can play about with the numbers if different but it should give you an idea of the calculations

You can go back 4 years...when I did a backdate a few years ago, I used the company expense system to validate the number of miles I had claimed, journeys etc

Thanks Caz3121....great breakdown...much appreciated for the info.

I have only been working since October last year....and I have a record of all the miles I did and all my wage slips so will be able to calculate it all up.

Is there a special form I need to submit and fill all these figures in please? if so do you know which one it is...so many different HMRC forms on their website.

Also would I receive a sum in the form of a cheque for the difference or would it be adjusted in my tax code.

Thank you once again for all your help.

    I have checked my wage slip for October 2013 and I received £503.15 for expenses. I traveled 1843.5 miles....if I times that by 23p = approx £424.00

    £503.15- £424.00 = £79.15 (this is for the job I get 40p a mile) the £424.00 is 23p per mile jobs done.

This months total mileage is 2051.....

September I received £345.26 in expenses....each month varies.....

Then you can claim for Oct 2012 - April 2013 now and April 2013 - April 2014 in a few months.
Claiming is done on an annual basis.
It doesn't matter which job you received the 40p for, all that matters is how much you received from your employer in the year.

    For October 2013 you travelled 1843.5 miles @ .25p = £460.87 and you receive £503.15.
But it doesn't work on a monthly basis look at post 7
