The Daily Express seems to think that shoppers will benefit from further price cuts at Tesco before Christmas. Waitrose, Lidl and Aldi have all grown sales and the other supermarkets have seen sales fall. Tesco is expecting another quarter of negative growth ie shrinking sales.

It looks reasonable. Waitrose customers are seen to be wealthier so more recession proof. Aldi and Lidl discount and grab sales from anyone feeling the pinch.

Talk Retail says that 20% of the 45 million regular supermarket shoppers in England and Wales are "promiscuous" "swapper-shoppers" who will shop at whichever store gives them the cheapest deals.

Surprisingly, 22% of Waitrose's 2m customers were said to be most likely to swap shop. But, says Talk Retail, "in real terms" Tesco, with 3.51m shoppers is most vulnerable to this. ASDA, Morrisons and C-op customers are least likely to swap shop.

Talk Retail says that Waitrose and Sainsbury's are the only supermarkets to have held onto customers.

Shoppers in London and SE are most likely to be swapper shoppers and customers in North least likely to. I don't see that myself because if prices are high and wages lower, surely that makes people more likely to look for bargains ?

I can't help thinking that if Tesco hadn't dragged other supermarkets into this brand matching yo yo pricing non-offer offers stuff, they wouldn't be getting er, duffed up ;)

What do you think ?

I rarely shop in Tesco these days, far too expensive and given that my local aldi and home bargains are within walking distance, Id be daft to even consider it. Some of their prices make my eyes water.

I always shop at Aldi. Cooked meat, cheeses, frozen food, tuna in particular are excellent quality and excellently priced.

I did a weekly shop in Tesco a few weeks ago, as it is nearer, and really felt I was paying more for poor quality produce. One pack of ham smelled mank. I still used it as it was within use by, but considering it was £2, and I normally pay £1 for delicious German Aldi ham, it was a rip off.

Isnt this a self-fullfiling prophesy. People in London area are more likely to swap because they have more choice , and so are able to swap easier ?

I'm mightily peed off with Tesco at the moment.

A couple of weeks ago, i was given a £20 off voucher at the checkout if you spent over £100 on electrical goods instore. Great, i thought, my daughter has asked for an Ipod Touch for Xmas, i'll use it for that.

Off i went to my local Tesco. None in stock, but shelf edge stickers showing them so asked the assistant if she would order one for me. No problem, she said, BUT, i wouldn't be able to use my voucher as it would be classed as an internet order, and not instore !! She went over to the Tesco Direct terminal which customers can use to start ordering one. I asked why she couldn't just order me one to collect from the store. Not possible she said, it had to be ordered through Tesco Direct !!

I told her not to bother as i could do that myself from home. I've complained to Tesco and had 3 emails apologising and saying that there were other items i could have bought with my voucher ! I told them that my daughter wanted an Ipod and not a toaster or hairdryer. It's fallen on deaf ears, lots of apologies and "we've passed on your comments to our Marketing Team" but no offer of actually letting me use the voucher.

If i'm instore, ordering instore, paying instore and collecting from the store, how on earth can that be classed as an internet order ?

    Not a happy customer :(

I had this voucher and it specifically said excludes Tesco Direct. That is the only way they let you order things in to Tesco. It didn't just say excludes Internet orders as then I could see the confusion.

Totally agree. My main shop now is in Aldi. Luckily my mum lives near there and I take her shopping otherwise it's across town for me. Tesco is for a top up shop. I got so fed up with their random price increases/decreases.
Spent just under £60 in there this week and i had a fair amount of stuff. Would have cost more at Tesco.

I overheard a conversation involving a senior head office manager at one of the big four. The impact of Aldi is significant and they are having to consider their strategy, as despite price match, clubcard, rollback, multi buy offers etc people are wising up and realise all these offers have to be paid for. Shoppers are getting to like the no nonsense Aldi approach of 'we are cheaper without the gimmicks'.

He also said Waitrose and M&S are doing well on the back of this as cash saved using Aldi is being spent on the occasional visits to the more expensive stores.

How can you say Aldi are cheaper?
That's a largely sweeping statement that simply isn't true. Aldi charge for carrier bags, while Tesco don't. Not that I am defending them, I am an Asda shopper all the way.

    I would consider Aldi but:
    > I simply don't like the look of their stores (disorganised).
    > Product names I don't trust.
    > Smaller trollies.

Aldi and Lidl style shops simply don't fit the bill for me. Plus I get 5% off of my years worth of shopping from Asda.

However I agree, Tesco has grown so big that any slight decrease in customers would seem like a large hit. They should stop with this whole voucher thing, try and price things to the same as Asda and keep their clubcard system. Tesco also need to stop with so many diversions of their business. Get rid of Tesco bank, insurances and anything else, stick to supermarket, their home/toys/argos style "Tesco Direct" and mobile phone business.

But then I expect the Aldi bubble to pop in the coming years too.

I know, but why don't Tesco have the facility to order stock other than from Tesco Direct ?
