Overall, if only 20% of customers shop around, that means 80% of customers don't - which seems shocking. Is it laziness ? Maybe they don't feel they need to save money  which seems unlikely in a recession.

I think there are many reasons. Some people do big monthly shops at a large out of town supermarket and don't want to drive for miles to another one just to save a few pennies. This is the idea of these large out of town supermarkets, you drive miles to get there and buy everything you need in the one store, including kids clothes TVs, toasters etc.

Other people may shop at a particular supermarket because it's on the way home from work, so saves them a long detour to another one, or having to make a special trip just for shopping.

Some people don't want to do part of their shopping in one store and part in another, so just pick the nearest one and think "Some things may be more expensive here and some may be cheaper, but my total shopping will cost about the same no matter which one I shop in".

People are different, they shop at different shops for different reasons and they all think they are doing right.

You don't have to change supermarkets to make savings - you can stay with the same one and make savings by changing shopping habits and eliminating waste. I've done my main grocery shopping at Tesco for years and my average spend has barely changed. Their online delivery service has been excellent for us, and I see no reason for us to change. Not everything in Aldi/Lidl is 20-30% cheaper than the big stores.

I was in Tesco this week and a 1kg bag of frozen spinach which used to be a pound, has gone up to 1.20. Thats just one item. It may not be a lot to many people but for people on low incomes a 20p price rise and there have been other items that have risen more than that in the last year, its a lot.

I cut out unnecessary waste, Im very frugal. But I can go into home bargains and aldi, in home bargains I get branded products sometimes 50 per cent of the price that you'll get them in the big supermarkets and in aldi for example, you'll get the super six cheap fruit and veg. When I have ever used tesco one thing I dont buy is their fruit, too expensive.

Also, all these price changes and promises, prices go up and down to make people think they are getting a bargain when a price gets raised and brought back down for that, Im sure all the big supermarkets do that, but aldi doesnt tend to, the prices remain steady.

Id rather buy aldi brands than tesco everyday value or the asda and morrisons equivalent any day.

Do the bulk in Aldi & then hoover up the offers in Tescos, sometimes they have the odd good deal on.

No wonder Tesco is loosing sales, if my local one is the average, I have not been in it for a while but it has deffo went down hill, it looked like a crappy B&M store, they seem not to be able to make up their minds whether they are a cheap shop or a quality supermarket, they are trying to be everything to everyone and failing at it.

I tried Shop and Scan in Tesco today, it was fab!
  • I almost always shop at Tesco even though I know I can shop cheaper but I keep getting £4/£5/£6 off £40 vouchers. I've had them through the post and also till spits. I've not paid "in full" for my shopping since mid August :j.

Guess I've just been lucky :)

Aldi do a £5 off a 40 pound spend every month. In fact a few people buy a couple and do two shops in that week. The only time Ive done a decent shop in Tesco this year was when they sent me a 15 pound off evoucher.

I did get a £3 off a 20 pound spend a few weeks ago, but I didnt see the point in going to spend 20 quid just to get £3 off when I could shop cheaper elsewhere.

    Much cheaper elsewhere.

Personally, I think the Aldi/Lidl thing is a fashion craze driven largely by novelty. I have tried both, several tines, and haven't been impressed. Life is too short to wander down cheerless aisles of stacked cardboard boxes clustered around bring 'n buy style tables with a random assortment of machine tools, tennis shoes, knock-off electrical goods and heaven knows what, all laid out as if a madman had done the job with a hand grenade. .

Life is also too short to go down every single aisle in the supermarket to find what was there last week has since been moved (in case you get too familiar with the layout). I can shop and pay in Aldi in about 1/2 the time of anywhere else.
    Back on the trains again!

The Grocer reported back in February that Lidl is the quickest supermarket to shop in.
