I'd also stay steer clear of the frilly bridesmaid dress, much better to be underdressed in something fabulous than overdressed in something fabulous!

Edit: I actually still have the prom dress I wore to my college prom a few years ago. As I will never wear it again you are absolutely more than welcome to it - I've only worn it once and didn't want to throw it away. It's a size 10 (sort of stretchy so a size 12 could easily get into it), black, covered in soft velvet flowers (also black) and glitter. It's got spaghetti straps and a bias cut hem (on me, fairly tall, it was midthigh to knee - if this is a bit too short for your daughter some of the fashionable knee length leggings would look great under it).

I can post pictures if you like :)

Our school disco was tonight- they finish school next week (Scotland)

Some of the primary 7 girls arrived in a big pink limo, got out wearing shades and said 'thank you' to the people takin gpics.

I thought it was very sad- though to be fair they were dressed quite normally- it is only the school disco after all. Just not very MSE:confused:

I'd encourage her to try and make an individual look from something that can be used again- does she really want everyone to laugh at her for turning up looking like a bridesmaid who missed the wedding? Classy dress with funky accessories is a safe, cool bet. Then she can have the last laugh at the pink meringues in the pictures in years to come.

    :rotfl: :rotfl:

my son is in yr 6 and has his leavers prom on july 19th ,the day before they break up

so much easier sorting out an outfit for a boy !

would hate to be the mum of an 11 yr old girl right now ! lol

Whatever you do please remember that your daughter is 10/11?. There is very little worse than a young girl dressed up to look 18. So many moms (not implying you) forget that little girls are just that, little girls. While wearing bobby socks may be a little extreme, low cleavages, strapless etc just doesn't gel nicely.

With all due respect to well meaning folk here, a cocktail dress is far too old for a 10 year old. I can't believe that a primary school would have a 'prom' night. Why not just have a primary school leaving disco? Children are forced to grow up far too quickly and then those in 'power' are suprised at the amount of children with mental health problems!

But this is just my personal, old fashioned view! :rotfl:

Wow what a great response. Thankyou to each and every one of you.

Kittykate, how very kind of you. some pics would be great.!!

Yeah prom at primary school. It hypes it up a bit better than a "School Disco" lol.

    I'm not a "SINGLE" mum, I'm a "DOUBLE" mum!:D

I think we all assumed it was the end of secondary school at the time cocktail was suggested

My dd has her p7 leavers last night , was everything from full length satin dresses to leggins. I got her dress from TK Maxx and they had lots of smaller size adult dresses (size 4 ,6,8 up) which would fit some 11/12 year olds

    Not just yours snowmaid.

I'm sat here looking out the window at the stretch pink limo that is picking up one of the neighbours' daughters. The other girls in the limo have just got out so a Mum can take some pictures of them all. God forgive me for having uncharitable thoughts but the girls are like little hookers.

All are wearing heavy makeup, 1 has a strapless dress which her flat figure can't hold up, another has a bra top dress - the front of which is very low and the rest are wearing dresses that 18 year olds would wear to go clubbing. They all have their hair 'dressed' in styles which are much too old for them and the 'bling' they are wearing is blinding me.

Even my 18 year old boy, who is a younger generation to me, lol, thinks they look terrible. One girl is standing with her hand on her hip leaning against the car and chatting to the driver. Son has commented that perhaps the fact the girls are dressed like mini adults will make them act like mini adults and I see his point.

I have no idea what goes through some parents minds. I'm in my early (very early ;) ) 40's and I had a 'Qualifying Dance' aka 'the quali' when I left primary. We all wore long dresses and the boys wore suits etc, but we still looked like kids.

Sorry Op, that was a bit 'bah humbug' wasn't it?

Hope your girl enjoys her night anyway. :)
  • As an ex-Y6 teacher I'm gobsmacked that primary schools are now having proms and give the OP my every sympathy. The school should not be so bl**dy irresponsible to encourage this adult behaviour in such young children. The outfits they wear at school discos are bad enough.

What are we doing to our kids?!
You'll never see a rainbow if you don't first put up with the rain . . . :happylove
