Prom dress for leaving primary school. Ideas?

Hi
My daughter is leaving her primary school for high school at the end of term and is having a prom night. I am doing the disco to save the school paying out of there funds.
I need a prom dress for her and dont want to fork out for something she will probably never use again and will sit in the wardrobe for an age.
I have suggested a simple dress that she can use again and accessorise this with some nice girly sparkly accessories, of which she is pulling her face at as i type. I think she wants one of these big puffy bridesmaids type dresses but I don't want to waste money.
Anyone know of any cheaper stores for this kind of thing??
Thanks in advance!

To be honest I think she will regret the big puff ball when she arrives. These events tend to be rather sophisticated these days. I would say a long version of a cocktail dress or modern type of bridesmaid dress.
Even pop on to ebay and have a look to see what you can find. I did a quick search and age 15/16 has come up with 24 items very cheaply. although not as sophisticated as the adult ones http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NW-RED-STONES-BRIDESMAID-PAGEANT-GIRL-DRESS-SZ-15-16_W0QQitemZ120133513988QQihZ002QQcategoryZ315QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
If she isn't a standard size for her age, I have found the following under adult sizes
This one looks lovely size 8

And this one size 10

Woolworths have got some straight long chiffon dresses, pink, black or cream for about £15.00. Also BHS bridesmaid section or ebay.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

Thanks for the replies.
I was going to avoid ebay as I dont want to end up buying the wrong size that I cant send back. She is 10 but really really tall for her age though very slender. I did suggest a long cocktail type dress so will look at your suggestions. If I did try the charity shops I would have to keep it a secret as although she has a very sensible/thrifty mum she is in that typical teenager mode atm.
Actually we are nearly the same size lol so I am hoping she will pick something I can nick off her for a night out.
Thanks again

Try BHS, they do bridesmaid dresses (but not the big foofy ones) and they are really pretty.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

My son had a prom when he left primary school & it was fab! But the girls did not wear prom dresses like you see in the American movies. There was alot of shift style dresses with shrugs & lacey wraps, pretty sandals & lots of girly glitter. No long dresses. Twins wore shortened down bridesmaid dresses (after the event I hasted to add!) & the malaysian girl wore a traditional (beautiful!) outfit. The boys wore smart trousers & shirts with & without ties (I bought my son an outfit that he was able to use for his nephews christening)
Boys got a buttonhole, girls a flower for their hair. The kids had raised mney themselves & the place looked great - a balloon arch for photos & tablecloths & flowers on the tables.
The teachers dressed up (the head was in a tux!) and a couple of kids wore a tux but they were the exception. Moaningmyrtle is on the right lines.
I hope you find something to please you both!!:rotfl:
Hope she has fun!! :jNEVER ASSUME! :rolleyes:0 -
I bought my DD a gorgeous dress from TK Maxx for a tenner. Red "chiffon", with a hankerchief hem and loads of "diamonds" on it. It swirls when you twist around in it.
Other than that Ebay do have some gorgeous dresses and some of them go for a fraction. I am just about to list a gorgeous one that DD wore to a wedding (all gold and cream tafetta). I would love to think I would get a decent price for it, but I bet it goes for a song. Have a look.
Other than that, yep Woolies had some pretty tafetta type dresses for about 15 quid and sometimes they have them at Matalan too. You can jazz it up yourself with accessories.
Good luck!!!:dance:Sometimes I sing and dance around the house in my underwear. Doesn't make me Madonna. Never will. :dance:0 -
Our school disco was tonight- they finish school next week (Scotland)
Some of the primary 7 girls arrived in a big pink limo, got out wearing shades and said 'thank you' to the people takin gpics.
I thought it was very sad- though to be fair they were dressed quite normally- it is only the school disco after all. Just not very MSE
I'd encourage her to try and make an individual look from something that can be used again- does she really want everyone to laugh at her for turning up looking like a bridesmaid who missed the wedding? Classy dress with funky accessories is a safe, cool bet. Then she can have the last laugh at the pink meringues in the pictures in years to come.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
